The homeless woman murdered in Central Park was a beloved artist and birdwatcher who made beautiful pieces dedicated to birds. She went by Lee Rogers, but also was known as Elise Bainbridge Hill. Her art was awesome. I hope her life story is shared and not just the grisly details
🚨🚨🚨 It’s not a leap from “grab them by the p*ssy” to the Cornell “Free p*ssy” chat. In just years. The rapists were just 10 years old when they first heard that from a future president and laughed at it.
The last 24 hours of news as a woman:
- A man jacks off to the woman next to him on a plane. United makes her return to her seat.
- 7 frat boys drug and gang rape a student for hours, and advertise “free p*ssy” to their frat. Cornell makes them write essays.
- A football player rapes a student. LSU reduces his suspension.
- A teen boy stalks and stabs a girl 10 times. Courts grant only a restraining order.
- Brendan Carr spent 9 years in a cult raping teen girls. Trump made him FCC Chair.
Ms. Rachel announces she’s matching Macklemore’s $1 million donation in support of Palestine:
“I will match Macklemore's donation and I invite every wealthy white celebrity to match it and speak out against the genocide in Gaza.
Over 20,000 precious Palestinian children have been killed and children continue to be killed every day.
We have a moral obligation to use our privilege and platforms to protect children and human rights.”
All of Ed Sheeran’s openers have now withdrawn from the Looper Tour. Please realize how big this is. This is what unity looks like. Billionaires are terrified of people realizing how strong they can be when we come together for a cause. Continue speaking out. Support the new artists that are deciding to put their careers at risk to take this stance.
I kept this story in my pocket for a long time....
September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day.
Every year in Pittsburgh the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys.
My first year as manager in Pittsburgh was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on.
We didn't win.
19 consecutive losing seasons.
2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive.
After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over.
"My mom wants to talk to you."
We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons.
She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up.
Roberto Jr. translated.
"My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy."
She was staring right at me.
Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth:
"I promise you, Vera. That won't happen."
Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it."
I said, "I hope I can keep it too."
I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it.
The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20.
On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field.
And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life.
The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug.
Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them.
@Pirates
half the country has been fundamentally priced out of what was free in the ussr in 1960 and dudes working 40 hours a week to share a 2 bedroom grey box in dallas will look you dead in the eye and tell you communism is the root of all evil
The only thing I have to say on the 25th anniversary is what Hunter S Thompson said in the aftermath. There's been few things said more prescient than the party's over. For someone like me who partied like hell in the 90's, 21stC has been very different. The party is still over.
Remember like six months ago when millions of documents were released that detail how our government is full of sadistic pedophiles and then nothing happened? Like literally nothing at all?
This is of course a horrifying indictment of American healthcare but you cant tell me at least 40% of his brain wasnt going to “fuuuuck dude i have so much aura rn”
@dancingofpens The pandemic was the perfect excuse for blood-sucking corporations to jack up prices and make it the new normal. And consumers have no way to fight it when it’s a collusive industry-wide effort involving highly inelastic demand.
🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."
My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."
I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.
