this free github tool is quietly eating @WisprFlow
been using freeflow for voice to text on my mac (been 2 months)
own grok api key โ costs me nothing ๐ฐ
whats the one paid tool you are still overpaying for?
Every day I read posts like โI saved $200/month by self-hosting!โ.
Here is my honest take:
๐จ STOP SELF-HOSTING YOUR WEB APP & DATABASE
Unless you really really know what you are doing. Most likely you don't.
Let me explain:
๐ Security: Especially now in times of AI finding a new vulnerability every day, you donโt want to be the one responsible for taking care of every little issue 24/7. A small issue that occurs while you are asleep can cost you your whole business.
๐ธ Cost: A $5 server seems cheaper than a $25 managed database until you count the hours you spend fixing it. Your time is the most expensive part of the setup. Also providers like Vercel & Neon have generous free tiers to get started with.
๐ Scaling: Going viral sounds great until your server crashes right when everyone shows up. Managed platforms scale up automatically, so your best day doesnโt turn into your worst.
๐ Downtime: When your server goes down at 3am or while youโre on vacation, thereโs no support team to call. Itโs just you, a laptop and angry users.
๐ Performance: Managed platforms put your app on servers close to your users around the world. Your single VPS in one data center means slow load times for everyone far away from it and when the load increases.
๐พ Backups: Everyone has a backup script, but almost nobody has ever tested restoring from it. You usually find out itโs broken the moment you actually need it.
๐ฏ Focus: Every hour spent on server configs is an hour not spent on your product. Your users donโt care where itโs hosted, they care that it works.
๐ Compliance: Things like GDPR, data encryption and audit logs are mostly handled for you on managed platforms. On your own server, youโre personally responsible if something goes wrong, and fines can be huge.
๐ก๏ธ DDoS: One angry person with a botnet can take your server offline in minutes. Big providers absorb these attacks every day without you even noticing. (been through it with outbid .lol)
Ship first, worry about infra later ๐
I know many teams that are, unfortunately, reinventing all these features right now because they need good context to run agents.
Here is a managed system where you connect your data, and it shapes it for agents:
โข It automatically cleans the data as it arrives
โข It organizes it
โข It summarizes it
โข It builds descriptions
โข It computes statistics
NEW: Apple is cutting employee AI spending budgets even as it pushes workers to use the technology more. Engineers have seen daily limits cut from $300 to $200, with further reductions to $100 planned. Other teams could see limits fall to $25. https://t.co/4tnOIaxpDz
@levelsio@spacexai i would never give any agent full acess to any of my account. i cant believe people are willingly doing it for the sake of few likes and all.
this is the most successful launch video in Silicon Valley history
18 years ago, the founder of Dropbox recorded his screen to make this demo
it took their waitlist from 5,000 to 75,000 overnight
imo, here's what made it work:
1. it showed the real product doing the one thing it promised. you drop a file into a folder and it shows up on your other computer
2. it was full of inside jokes for the exact audience he was trying to reach
3. he posted it where his users already were. an earlier version went on Hacker News, and this one went on Digg
4. it explained a new idea without any jargon
5. it let people see something they couldn't use yet. Dropbox wasn't open to the public, so the video showed it working and the waitlist did the rest
while everyone is doing super fancy video with Claude, you can do a very simple screen recording
you will look x10 more authentic
