The golden throne of Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922 by the British archaeologist Howard Carter. It was found beneath a hippopotamus funerary bed in the antechamber of the Tomb of Tutankhamun.

The luxurious armchair is distinguished by the complexity of its technique and an abundance of details. Two projecting lions’ heads protect the seat of the throne, while the arms take the form of winged uraei or rearing cobras wearing the double Pschent crown of Egypt and guarding the cartouche names of the king.

Queen Ankhesenamun holds a salve-cup and spreads perfumed oil on her husband’s collar in a typical Amarna style scene, the sun disc Aten shines above the royal couple. At the time it was made, their names were Tutankhaten and Ankhespaaten.

The scene shows one of the most famous and intimate scenes in art history: the young king appears sitting and being regaled with an ointment by his wife Ankhesenamun.

The king wears a composite crown and a broad collar, and the queen wears a diadem. The bodies and wigs of both of them are inlaid with exquisite coloured glass, and their linen robes are silver.

MTV’s Unplugged series was a real test for the musicians of that era.

Sure, you sound huge wired up to stacks of amps with distortion and effects stacked on top of each other.

But can you do it in a small room, up close to the audience, without all the gear to hide behind?

Stripped naked of the electricity.

Just the songs, the voices, and whatever you could pull out of an acoustic guitar and bongos.

The Stone Temple Pilots walked into that room in 1993 and passed the test.

Scott Weiland sat in a rocking chair like he owned the place.

No theatrics, no wall of sound to lean on.

Just the band and the material.

“Plush,” “Creep,” “Wicked Garden,” and the first public airing of “Big Empty.”

It held up. The songs didn’t need the volume to work.

That was the point of the whole series.

Some bands just got quieter.

The ones that mattered found a different kind of power when everything else was taken away.
