The Majority of the Filipinos and the ICC
According to OCTA research 59% of Filipinos want to rejoin the ICC and 55% favor government cooperation with the ICC drug war probe. I welcome this news very very much!
There was a time when this was an unpopular opinion, you have no idea how much hate I received for simply saying that we should cooperate with the ICC for various reasons. Please check the link of my previous tweet as attached below.
This is one of the very few issues that I do not agree with the President and I am still hoping that he will reconsider his position on this issue. Although it is important to note that the President ordered the DOJ and other concerned gov’t agencies to conduct their own investigation regarding the said matter. The good news is… Asec. Clavano said weeks ago that more and more families of the War on Drugs victims are cooperating with them.
I was at the congress when they invited SolGen Guevarra to hear the resolution filed by Cong. Gutierrez and Cong. Abante. After all the new information which came into light concerning the Dutertes and connected to the ICC War on Drugs probe… I think there’s really a need for another hearing.
Our withdrawal of membership to the ICC was self-serving to the former President, he made that decision while in the middle of the internationally contested War on Drugs. I agree with what Cong. Rodge said… rejoining the ICC would signify that the Philippines values human rights and the rule of Law.
"If a state becomes a party to the Rome Statute, any state leader could be investigated and prosecuted if he commits a core crime, particularly if he is the head of state, member of the national legislature, or government official at a similarly high level” -Late Senator Mirriam Defensor Santiago.
After six long years of the Duterte presidency, I am firm in saying that we should rejoin the ICC and avoid such “alleged” abuse of power.
In the words of then Chief of Police and now Senator during the War on Drugs “Kung wala kayong kasalanan, walang dapat ikatakot”.
