RAM consumption on Linux explodes (+100GB) when using subagents.

This is a HUGE bug affecting thousands of users for months.

It’s all over GitHub and Reddit, with tens of issues and long threads of users trying to debug it.

The current “solutions” people come up with are basically sophisticated prompt engineering tricks, begging Claude not to use subagents in clever ways.

This reproduces even on a clean, fresh Ubuntu install out of the box (no tricks).

I run a 256GB RAM machine and I can’t use parallel agents whatsoever, no matter which terminal I use or which OS optimizations I tried.

Subagents are one of the best Claude Code features, and right now they’re basically unusable for many of us.

This is 100% a bug.

The actual RAM needed by the agents is much lower in practice, there is a bug in the CLI engine that spawns them.

I personally use the Agents SDK in a custom tool to bypass Claude Code’s CLI from spawning agents on its own.

It works flawlessly with tens of agents in parallel and the RAM consumption stays reasonable.
