Selama ribuan tahun peradaban manusia, seks itu sebenarnya tidak tabu dan tidak dianggap jorok. Mau bagaimana pun, seks adalah alasan kenapa manusia bisa mempertahankan spesiesnya. Namun kemudian muncul agama-agama Abrahamik dan aliran filsafat tertentu yang memisahkan antara "tubuh" yang dianggap rendah/berdosa dan "jiwa" yang suci. Seksual kemudian dibatasi hanya untuk tujuan prokreasi (reproduksi) di dalam institusi pernikahan yang sah.

Sebelum adanya tes DNA, masyarakat yang sangat patriarkis di masa lalu mengontrol seksualitas perempuan dengan ketat untuk memastikan anak yang dilahirkan adalah darah daging yang sah. Akibatnya, muncullah konsep pernikahan yang kaku, serta konsep keperawanan. Seks di luar struktur pernikahan dianggap sebagai pelanggaran berat.

Selain itu, sebelum ditemukannya antibiotik dan pengobatan modern, penyakit menular seksual (PMS) seperti sifilis atau gonore adalah vonis kematian. Karena masyarakat zaman dahulu belum memahami teori kuman, mereka mengaitkan penyakit mengerikan ini dengan "kutukan" atau "hukuman Tuhan" akibat perbuatan maksiat. Stigma ini membuat seks, terutama berganti-ganti pasangan, dilabeli sebagai sesuatu yang kotor dan membawa malapetaka.

Pada abad ke-19, Eropa mengalami era kepuritanan yang ekstrem, di mana membicarakan tubuh atau seks dianggap sangat tidak sopan. Ketika negara-negara Barat menjajah berbagai belahan dunia, mereka membawa dan memaksakan standar moral ini. Praktik budaya lokal yang terbuka soal tubuh dan seksualitas dilabeli sebagai "primitif", "buas", atau "tidak beradab".

Itulah sebabnya kenapa membicarakan seks di zaman sekarang dianggap cabul dan mesum.
