Being marine mammals, whales need to return to the surface regularly to breathe, underwater they are apnea.
👉During a dive, "fibrous plugs" will block the blowholes (nasal cavities) and prevent water from entering their airway.

In humpback whales, calves stay with their mothers for about a year after birth and feed exclusively on their mother's milk until they are 6 months old. In general, they are weaned at 11 months.
The diet of humpback whales being based on krill, let's recall that these sea behemoths we can watch around Madagascar at a given period feed in Antarctic waters during the austral summer.
As they blow out of the water, whales contract their muscles to clear their blowholes for breathing. Water could eventually enter these cavities but it will be expelled when they exhale.
How does the humpback whale nurse?

Did you know ?
Female humpback whales accompanied by their calf around Sainte Marie are on average 12 m long. However, they can be at least 10 m long and reach up to 15 m.
As for calves, their length can vary between 3,5 m and 7 m long, but on average they are about 5 m long.
As part of the conservation of marine mammals in Madagascar, Cetamada also supports the local population of Sainte Marie through sustainable community development projects. The Anjaranay community training and health center in Ambodiforaha has been part of the projects since 2015
