As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re highlighting one more remarkable nurse whose leadership helped shape the profession—Anna Caroline Maxwell.
Often referred to as the “American Florence Nightingale,” Maxwell played a major role in advancing nursing education and professional standards in the United States. She helped establish and lead the nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital in New York, setting higher expectations for training and helping strengthen the role of nurses in modern healthcare.

Born in 1845, Mahoney made history as the first professionally trained African American nurse in the United States after graduating from the New England Hospital for Women and Children’s nursing program in 1879.
