ICYMI: Students and visitors flocked to the UP Fine Arts Gallery on the first day of the Manila Illustration Fair, which brought together 30 artists—five international, 15 from Metro Manila, and 10 from provinces across the country. Organizers stressed that this expansion reflects their goal of democratizing the space for illustrators beyond Manila.
“The agenda is really to have more people come in from different parts of the country and also the region, who are willing to bring their art here,” said MIF Head of Media and Public Relations Mef Marzan. She added that sustaining art also means confronting its “material realities,” from securing funds for production to affording materials.
The partnership with the College of Fine Arts was described as a smooth collaboration, rooted in the shared intention of giving young artists a platform. “Since we approached UP CFA with the intention of also giving it space for their students… they really loved the intention, so we were able to generously get the venue,” said finance representative France Daffon. CFA students and faculty are also free to enter the galleries throughout the event.
For student organizations participating in the selling, the fair is both an avenue for visibility and an opportunity. “We have yung mga yearly fairs like within the college, pero iba pa rin yung ganito kalaki kasi ang daming international artists, and at the same time, malaki talaga yung pag-advertise ng event,” said Aina Balicao, a fourth-year Visual Communication student.
Fellow fourth-year Visual Communication student Von Sanchez added that joining such events fulfills their organization’s goal of elevating and uplifting the arts, while also helping them build and expand a community of artists.
Alongside the exhibits, which are openly accessible, the MIF will also host workshops and talks in the coming days, further opening the space for exchange between students, artists, and the public.
