Some stories stay with you long after you’ve read them.
Mike was only 13 when doctors told him he had a very small chance of surviving cancer. The odds were against him from the start, but he refused to quit.
Over the next eight years he went through more than most people face in a lifetime. The cancer came back several times. He lost a leg. There were surgeries, long hospital stays, and days when simply getting out of bed was a victory.
Through every stage of that fight, one friend never left his side.
His dog, Rusty.
They had grown up together, and no matter how difficult things became, Rusty was always there waiting. He didn’t care about hospital rooms, scars, or bad days. He just wanted to be close to his best friend.
During Mike’s final days, a friend captured a quiet moment between them in the hospital. Mike reached out to stroke Rusty’s face one last time while Rusty stood beside the bed, calm and faithful as always.
There wasn’t much anyone could say in that room.
Not long afterward, Mike passed away at 21 years old.
The photograph spread around the world because it showed something words often can’t explain. Dogs don’t understand diagnoses or life expectancy. They simply love the people who love them, and they stay… right to the very end.
Rusty couldn’t change what was happening.
But he made sure Mike never had to face it alone. ❤️
I’ve been absent more than usual. Awaiting an appointment for my mother for dementia testing. It’s more than memory loss; the anger, confusion, and hallucinations have made the decline rapid, frightening, and unforgiving. Watching someone you love struggle with a reality you cannot fix is a heartbreak beyond words. Praying for answers, strength, and God’s grace as we face whatever comes next.🙏
