Okay. Here are facts:

1) I still have CDs bought in 1988. I still have DVDs bought in 1998. I have tested them. They are fine.

2) EVERYTHING dies. BUT most optical discs are manufactured to have a 100-150 year lifespan.

Your great-grandchildren may not be able to play your DVD of Eurotrip, but it should be fine for your lifetime.

3) Warner Bros had a run of discs in the late 90s that were poorly made. Those have degraded and sent people like Daniel here into a “the sky is falling” panic. It was a few poorly made batches of movies that most all have been remade and are fine now.

4) EVERYTHING dies faster in shitty conditions. If Daniel Friedman isn’t outright lying then he lives in a greenhouse where humidity and high temperatures ruin all physical things. Your furniture, your books, and, yes, your optical media will all rot in hot, wet conditions. I do NOT recommend getting a storage unit in Cambodia for your movies.

5) Right now hard drive prices are crazy high. But when they come down, buy some. Get MakeMKV. Rip your movies to ISO files. Back up your ISOs. Check annually for “bit rot” (hey, guess what? Data on disks “die” too!). Then your great-great-great grandkids can enjoy your “DVD” of Eurotrip. Or if your disc rots in 2107 you can burn a new one.

My first Blu-Ray is almost 16 years old. It's IRON MAN 2. I ran it earlier, and it works perfectly. I also have 30-year-old DVDs that still work. Stop.

Sony is currently charging $70 for God of War Ragnarok digitally. It is $32 at Wal-Mart. The game is 4 years old.

People will no longer have options after 2028 and will HAVE to go directly to Sony’s digital storefront and pay whatever PlayStation says.
