🇷🇸 The body of war criminal Ratko Mladić, who died in the Hague prison, has been delivered to Serbia

Footage shows military personnel carrying the coffin out of the plane and placing it into a minivan.

The former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide for his role in the Srebrenica massacre of 1995, when after the enclave was captured by Bosnian Serb forces approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed.

Mladić died on 27 August in the UN detention unit in The Hague.

The convoy took the body to the Military Medical Academy under full escort.

🇷🇸 Ratko Mladić is a convicted war criminal. The Butcher of Bosnia was found guilty of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. He epitomises some of the worst atrocities of our European history, not least the genocide of Srebrenica. It is shameful and disrespectful for the victims and their families to reserve such honours for his funerals. I condemn that act in the strongest terms, and have passed this message to my Serbian counterpart in charge of European affairs this morning. It’s a step distancing Serbia from EU’s fundamental values of respect for human dignity, human rights and the fight against impunity - going in the opposite direction of what is expected from a EU candidate country.

Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The return of his remains to Belgrade reminds Europe of the darkest pages in our recent history.

The glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is built. That path requires confronting the past, genuine reconciliation and respecting the victims of war crimes.
