Cross-country mobility trials of a Heavy Tank T29 began #OTD in 1948. The transmission of tank #3 broke after just 235 km of travel. This was the first of many mechanical issues experienced by the 64 ton tank. #tanks#history#ColdWar
#OTD in 1941 the Soviet tank directorate rejected a proposal for a 6-ton light airborne tank that could be towed behind a plane like a glider. A similar project was already in the works but only one prototype was built and rejected after one test flight #tanks#history#WW2#WWII
One of the greatest deception stories of WWII is the secret listeners who bugged Hitler’s generals at Trent Park and its sister sites.
German-Jewish refugees, bound by silence for decades, helped shorten the war.
My book 'The Walls Have Ears' tells the entire history!
#OTD in 1942 Grotte got down to business in building his P.1000 superheavy tank. He wrote to Krupp's chief designer Erich Müller asking for consultation on a 16,000 hp engine group and matching transmission to power his monster. #tanks#history#WW2#WWII

Ended my week on the Somme for #Somme110 at Ancre British Cemetery where dead from both ends of the battle lie. Also heard a Golden Oriole in the trees, a bird mentioned by many soldiers who were there in 1916.
Not forgotten. Killed on this day 1916. I paused by his grave two days ago and remembered him. I have his trio and plaque at home. On many walks across the field in which he fell with others from his battalion I have found two Suffolk cap badges. I always think was one his?
#OTD in 1939 the Japanese began a major offensive in the Battle of Khalkhin-Gol. The goal of the attack was to cross the river, take the Bain-Tsagan mountain, and use this favourable position to encircle and destroy Soviet and Mongolian troops. #tanks#history#WW2#WWII
A model of the 17 cm K Sfl. was finished #OTD in 1942. This heavy SPG was based on the VK 45.02(H), the future King Tiger, which was also in very early stages. Despite starting so early, the project was never completed. #tanks#history#WW2#WWII
