Why do doctors dismiss patients who report side effects from antidepressants and other drugs, claiming it’s in their head or simply “the disease getting worse”?

This response reflects a blatant disregard for patient lived experiences and the potential dangers of these medications.

Harms in medicine is real. It cannot continue to be downplayed or an afterthought at time of drug approval. Sometimes I wonder if it’s not the patients who are afraid of the uncomfortable truth, but those responsible for understanding and addressing their concerns.

I get a lot of letters from family members who are looking for ways to help their adult children. They have a genuine desire to learn more about schizophrenia, so they’re in a better position to help. I welcome those letters and try my best to ease their worries and support them in any way I can. Then, there are the letters that come from a place of blame. They hold their children responsible for the disintegration of their families and the immense emotional pain they have endured. I don’t respond to those letters. At one time, I was the recipient of a family smear campaign designed to blame and punish. One may sometimes question the motivation behind doctors' communication with families, wondering if it is merely to legitimize forced medication of patients.
