Starmer’s claim that he’s left the UK in a better position is a stretch for most people.

Here’s the clearest picture from the data:
• Growth has been weak and uneven. The economy stagnated in late 2024, had a decent bounce in early 2025, but forecasts got downgraded and overall it’s been sluggish.

• Inflation was 2.2% when he took over in July 2024 — it’s been higher since, sitting around 3-3.4% for much of 2025.

• NHS waiting lists are down due to Labour paying the NHS millions to delete patients off the waiting lists.

• Unemployment has risen from about 4.1% to around 4.7-4.9%.

• National debt jumped by over ��130 billion in his first year, now over 96% of GDP.
