In Memory of The Scottish Radical Martyrs of 1820:

Fearful of the growing support for reform, the Home Secretary, Lord Sidmouth, made the
decision to charge a total of 88 men with High Treason under the English Treason Act of 1708.

Grand Juries, a characteristic of English law, & used for the specific purpose of trying
people under that Act, were set up in various locations across Scotland. As Scots lawyers
were unfamiliar with English law, a solicitor came up from London to assist.

On Friday 8th September 1820, John Baird and Andrew Hardie were executed at Stirling.
In their final speeches, both declared that they
died “for the cause of Truth and Justice”. The men were then hanged and beheaded. Their bodies were originally buried in a single grave outside the Castle.

Baird, Hardie and James Wilson, were accused of planning and leading a series of uprisings in the West of Scotland.

All three men were members of the Scottish
Radicals, a movement that traces its roots back
to the 1780s. Inspired by events in America and
Europe, the Radicals had demanded constitutional change and better pay and
conditions for workers, many of whom were employed in Scotland’s weaving industry.
