Mobile giants summoned by Parliament over data costs and connectivity
South Africa’s Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies has called the country’s major mobile network operators, Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Telkom, and Rain to appear before it on Friday, June 13, in a bid to tackle persistent concerns over high data costs and patchy network connectivity.
The summons follows growing public frustration and repeated calls for affordable communication services, a critical issue in a nation where digital access is increasingly essential for education, business, and daily life.
The committee is expected to press the operators on their plans to lower data prices and improve service quality, particularly in underserved rural areas.
With South Africans grappling with economic challenges, the outcome of Friday’s session could set the tone for future policy interventions. All eyes will be on the mobile giants as they face lawmakers, with consumers hoping for tangible commitments to bridge the digital divide.
