Black History Month was started in 1987 by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, a Ghanian refugee who had lived in Britain sinceโฆ 1984.
What did black people contribute to British history in that short time?

9โ11 September 1985, Handsworth and Lozells Riots, Birmingham.
Petrol bombs, looting, police attacked. About 45 shops looted and burned. Damage in the hundreds of thousands of pounds. Thirty-five injured and two post office workers were burned to death. (From their 999 calls) โThey are smashing their way in, they are going to kill us.โ โPlease come now, they are in the shop trying to kill us.โ
28โ30 September 1985, Brixton Riots.
Fires, looting, cars attacked, occupants dragged out and robbed, petrol bombs, assaults on police. 55 cars were burned, 58 homes and shops burgled and 2 young White women were gang r*ped, 1 off the street and the other as her house was being burgled. About 250 arrested.
A freelance photographer named David Hodge, on his first job for the Sunday Telegraph, was beaten to death.
30 Septemberโ1 October 1985, Peckham Riots.
Petrol bombs, shops set alight, a carpet warehouse off Peckham High Street burned.
1 October 1985, Toxteth Riots, Liverpool.
Court protests turned violent over four black defendants accused of beating and stabbing a man to death. Cars were stoned, occupants dragged out and robbed, at least five vehicles including a mail van overturned and torched. Missiles thrown at Hope Street police station. At least ten injured, including three officers.
6โ7 October 1985, Broadwater Farm Riots, Tottenham.
Bricks, bottles, petrol bombs. Cars and buildings burned. Shotguns and a revolver fired at police. About 500 officers on the estate. By midnight, 58 police and 24 others were taken to hospital.
PC Keith Blakelock found himself separated from the others and was set upon by a pack of 50. The pathologist counted 40 stab or slash wounds. He had lost several fingers trying to shield himself, had a six-inch gash that smashed his jaw and a six-inch knife was left buried in his neck up to the hilt... they had tried to hack his head off.
Autumn 1985, smaller outbreaks across Leicester, Coventry, Wolverhampton and Bristol. These are recorded as violent unrest.
7โ9 May 1986, St Paulโs Riots, Bristol.
About 600 officers raided multiple drug houses. Rioting and attacks on police followed. Black youths surrounded a White coupleโs car, smashed the windscreen through and hospitalised them both. Ten officers and three journalists were also injured.
21โ23 June 1987, Chapeltown Riots, Leeds.
Shop windows smashed, looting, police attacked. Cars and windows burned, bombed and stoned. A shop burned down.
1 October 1987, London.
The first UK Black History Month event began with Ghanian refugee Akyaaba Addai-Sebo and special guest Maulana Karenga, a black nationalist from California, USA.
Karenga had served prison time for felony assault and false imprisonment of two women. Deborah Jones and Gail Davis were kidnapped, stripped naked, whipped with an electrical cord, beaten with a baton, burned with a soldering iron and had detergent forced down their throats.
