Why did Jesus tell His Disciples to buy 2 swords?
Let's weigh the matter righteously
on the scales of the Word of God
And I am happy to explain, since it's widely used for evil instead of good
Jesus explicitly gives the reason in v. 37 to fulfill the prophecy in Isaiah 53:12 (“And he was numbered with the transgressors”, “counted among the lawless”, “numbered with the criminals”)
This is part of the Suffering Servant song in Isaiah 53, which describes the Messiah’s atoning death.
When Jesus first sent the disciples out on mission (Luke 9:1-6 and 10:1-12), they went without money, extra clothes, or provisions and lacked nothing, God provided through hospitality.
Now the situation is changing dramatically as Jesus is about to be arrested, tried, crucified, and the disciples will face hostility, persecution, and a new era without His physical presence. They will need to be more self-reliant (purse/bag for basic needs).
The swords specifically is NOT a general command for self-defense or arming up for future ministry.
Jesus ties it directly and immediately to the Isaiah prophecy. By having (and visibly carrying) swords/weapons, the group would (appear to the authorities as armed rebels or “transgressors") a band of lawless criminals or political revolutionaries.
This would justify treating Jesus as a dangerous criminal (which the Romans and Jewish leaders did) and fulfill the prophecy that the Messiah would be “numbered with” such people. It was prophetic, the swords created the outward appearance required for the arrest and crucifixion to unfold as Scripture foretold.
“That’s enough!” (v. 38), Not “two swords are plenty to fight with,”
but either
(1) “That is sufficient [for the prophetic purpose]”
or
(2) a way of ending the conversation because the disciples were missing the point (they immediately took it literally and produced the two they already had).
Two swords among 11+ men (Judas had left) are USELESS FOR ACTUAL COMBAT or DEFENSE against a mob or Roman soldiers, exactly the point.
the swords ensured the group did "not appear" as a harmless, peaceful band of innocent teachers or pilgrims. Instead, they appeared as potential lawbreakers/revolutionaries (“transgressors”), which was necessary for the events to align with prophecy. It was NEVER about fighting or using the swords in battle.
Jesus immediately stops any use of the sword, when Peter draws one and attacks, Jesus rebukes him sharply, heals the victim, and says “No more of this!” He never intended or allowed violence.
BEAUTIFUL King Jesus could have overpowered everyone supernaturally, He references calling angels (Matthew) but chooses not to, so Scripture (including Isaiah 53) would be fulfilled. His kingdom “is not of this world” (John 18:36), IT DOES NOT ADVANCE BY THE SWORD.
The arresting party’s own words were, They come “with swords and clubs” as if against “a rebellion”/robber (Luke 22:52). The presence of even two swords among Jesus’ group made them look exactly like that, fulfilling the prophecy.
He consistently taught non-retaliation, loving enemies, turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:38-44), and laying down His life voluntarily. The apostles later emphasize the same (e.g., Romans 12:18-21; 1 Peter 2:21-23).
The early church did not take this as a call to arms; they faced persecution without violence.
At the Last Supper, as Jesus prepared to drink the cup of suffering, He gave this final instruction so that, when the authorities came, He would be arrested and executed precisely as the suffering Messiah prophesied in Isaiah: “numbered with the transgressors.”
The two swords were stage props for that fulfillment, not weapons for a fight He had zero intention of allowing or winning on human terms.
This is the unified understanding across the vast majority of biblical studies, however seems to be forgotten by those who worship Rome.
I pray this pricks your heart in understanding ✝️🫂💚🙏
Today's study is on Grace
Nearly every world religion teaches that you have to work for your salvation. If you work hard enough and are good enough, then you'll make it.
Islam -- a Muslim's good works must outweigh the bad.
Judaism -- righteousness comes from strict obedience to the Law.
Buddhism -- Nirvana is achieved only by enlightenment and meticulous practice.
Hinduism -- a multitude of gods must be appeased through some kind of ritual.
American popular religion -- if you do more good than bad, you'll go to heaven.
Only in true, biblical Christianity are we taught that God sent Jesus Christ to die for our sins, so that if we believe in him, we'll be saved.
It is all God's grace -- God's favor for the utterly undeserving. Our only part is to believe in our hearts that Christ is Lord. That is astonishing!
Grace is central to our understanding of God and Christ, a core theme of both Old and New Testaments. The Greek word charis ("grace") appears 152 times in the New Testament. And in the Gospels, the words love, mercy, and compassion teach the same wonderful truths about our Lord's giving nature.
The message of grace is crystal clear in the Bible. People argue about how much is God's part and how much is man's part in salvation. We learn from comparing contrasting positions. However, rather than enter deeply into the controversy in these lessons, I've decided to focus on the clear Scripture teachings on grace.
So let's look at Grace in Hebrew and Koine Greek!
Hebrew-hen (כֵּן), pronounced like "ken". This word translates to "favor" or "grace" and often describes God's undeserved favor or acceptance. While not always directly translated as "grace," hen also carries nuances of "delight," "charm," or "beauty,
Koine Greek-charis (χάρις). It essentially means "unmerited favor, kindness, or gift". The word "charis" encompasses a broader meaning than just "grace" in English, often including concepts like joy, pleasure, and charm
It's God’s benevolence on the undeserving.” In His grace, God is willing to forgive us and bless us, even though we fall short of living righteously.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God." (Romans 5:1-2)
"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Importance of Grace
Grace is most needed and best understood in the midst of sin, suffering, and brokenness. We live in a world of earning, deserving, and merit, which result in judgment. That is why everyone wants and needs grace. Judgment kills. Only grace makes us alive.
A shorthand for what grace is - “mercy, not merit.” Grace is the opposite of karma, which is about getting what you deserve. Grace is getting what you don’t deserve and not getting what you do deserve. Christianity teaches that what we deserve is death as the price of sin, which separates us from God, Who is life.
While everyone desperately needs it, grace is not about us. Grace is a word about God: his un-coerced initiative and pervasive, extravagant demonstrations of care and favor. In grace, God gives nothing less than Himself. Grace, then, is not a third thing or substance mediating between God and sinners, but is Jesus Christ in redeeming action.
Christians live every day by the grace of God. We receive forgiveness according to the riches of God’s grace, and grace drives our sanctification. Paul tells us, “the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives” (Titus 2:11)

There are around 400k children in the system in the USA at any given time. The average age of the child is 8, with 1-5 year olds making the largest demographic. Just here.
Here in America there are around 400k churches.
If every church took the time to care for 1 American child each, we could end this here, or severely blunt it. But alas, America is full of fake, lazy, idolatrous wannabe Christians, instead of Holy Spirit filled instruments for Christ Jesus
Proverbs 24:17-18
When your enemy falls, do not be glad,
And when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice;
Lest Yahweh see it and it be evil in His eyes,
And turn His anger away from him.
James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world
Sirach 27:6: "The orchard’s fruit discloses the cultivation; so a person’s speech discloses the cultivation of his mind."
Matthew 7:16, 20: "By their fruit you will recognize them."
Jeremiah 10:25
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You
And on the families that do not call Your name,
For they have devoured Jacob;
They have devoured him and consumed him
And have made desolate his abode.
You, as a Saved Christian, are Jacob, being consumed
Jeremiah 10:23-24
I know, O Yahweh, that a man’s way is not in himself,
Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
Discipline me, O Yahweh, but with justice;
Not with Your anger, lest You bring me to nothing.
Jeremiah 10:14
Every man is senseless, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven images;
For his molten images are a lie,
And there is no breath in them.
The modern world is still doing it.
Millions of people stacked together, known by nobody, hiding under glass, rent, apps, traffic, and noise.
