Police recently responded to a complaint about a dog left in an unattended vehicle in the West Edmonton Mall parking lot. The temperature outside had reached 36 degrees. Animal Control Peace Officers were able to break the window to take the dog into their custody. The driver eventually returned to their vehicle after 45 minutes, where EPS officers arrested and charged them with Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal.

The Edmonton Police Service would like to remind the public that leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles is unsafe during extreme heat. On a warm day, even vehicles parked in the shade with the windows rolled down can reach a staggering 49 degrees in minutes. If you see a child or pet in distress, call 911 immediately.

Edmonton animal control says they've had 47 calls about dogs in hot cars since May, including one today outside the court house.
