‘They tried to make us Russians’: the children Putin stole

Thousands of Ukrainian youngsters have been abducted by Russia and indoctrinated to be ‘mini soldiers’. But a summer camp is helping those that were rescued.

🔴 Russian forces have abducted thousands of Ukrainian children during the invasion, with the aim of "re-educating" them and turning them into Russians. This is a war crime, and arrest warrants have been issued by the International Criminal Court for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Putin's children's commissioner.

🔴 The exact number of abducted children is unknown, with estimates ranging from 20,000 to 720,000. Fewer than 600 have been rescued so far.

🔴 The children are subjected to indoctrination in Russian schools, where they are taught that Russia is a great country and Ukraine is bad. They are also forced to participate in pro-Russian activities, such as singing the Russian anthem and making socks for Russian soldiers.

🔴 Those who resist indoctrination face punishment and even being sent to military schools to fight for Russia.

🔴 The children who have been rescued are traumatised by their experiences and require intensive therapy to help them recover.

🔴 A special camp in northwest Ukraine is providing therapy and support to children who have been rescued from forced abduction or occupation.

🔴 One boy from Kherson, now 15, recounted how he was stepped on by Russian soldiers and told: “You will make bullets with which to kill Ukrainians.”

🔴 The children are struggling to trust adults and develop friendships, and they are fearful of being even a minute late for anything.

🔴 “Children who return from Russian occupation are like mini-soldiers,” said Vannui Martyrosian, 33, the lead psychologist sitting with her black labrador Lola, who she jokes is the main therapist. But even on Lola, war has taken its toll. She has turned grey and developed epilepsy because of the stress of shelling and air raid sirens.

🔴 “They are all very well behaved in a negative way, fearful of being even a minute late. It’s painful to see.”
Unlike previous camps, she said, “This time it took us much longer to develop contact with these children as adults are a source of danger for them.”

🔴 “For two years they’ve been told, ‘Ukraine doesn’t exist, we [Russia] are a large beautiful country that saved you’,” she said.
