Was at a Portuguese literary festival and this (great) writer kept saying the most inane thing. And then it hit me: it's model collapse. He doesn't know things (about irl) bc he has just consumed fiction by people who have only consumed fiction by people who etc. Total reality disconnect.
What is worse: he's foolish. He thinks he knows things because he's well-read, but he's DEEPLY read, NOT broadly-read which, seemingly paradoxically!, makes him know LESS than he would otherwise! (This seems like a sort of permanent "failure mode"? Like psychology itself, given the replication crisis, is an area such that if you take a Psych 101 class you will know less [ie know more false things than true things] than before! And that's supposed to be a NON-fiction field! I suppose psychology is better understood as fiction… It explain how people relate to it.)
So my dad has been ending every phone call with "stay dangerous" instead of "goodbye" for like six months now. We all thought he was just being a weird dad. Turns out he's been mishearing the ending of a podcast he listens to. The host says "stay curious" but my dad is slightly deaf in one ear. He's been going around telling his coworkers, my grandmother, and apparently his DOCTOR to "stay dangerous" this entire time. My mom only found out because his doctor called to check if everything was okay at home. My dad has now decided he likes his version better and refuses to stop. Yesterday he told a nun to stay dangerous.
what makes an addiction an addiction, structurally, is not that it feels good and you want to keep doing it - drinking water feels good and we want to keep doing it and that's not an addiction. what makes an addiction an addiction is that good feelings mean something, and sometimes those meanings are lies
when you use an addiction to constantly lie to yourself over and over again, your felt understanding of your life diverges increasingly from the reality of what's actually happening - coked out bliss while the trash piles up in your hikikomori cave. serious addictions destroy your life because they undermine the ordinary processes that cause you to wake up and go "wait, this shit is not okay, i have problems and i need to fix them"
If I didn’t have to fuck I’d move to Montana. Get a cabin; some acreage. Out there you can own a pond. Maybe; I have no fucking idea. But I’m pretty sure you can get a place on a fuckton of land with a breathtaking view of snow capped mountains and possibly a creek running through it where you can flyfish, if you’re into flyfishing. Huge meadows, maybe lightly forested, that bloom in the spring with tiny delicate wildflowers. Songbirds massing on trees to pick berries in the fall; stopping through on their way to Panama. Elk. Deer. Wolves maybe. Bears. Maybe one nosy and mischievous bear with whom you are constantly in an arms race as he finds more and more fiendishly clever ways to get into your garbage and you find more and more Rube Goldbergian ways to keep him out, and you secretly respect and take delight in such an adversary until one day he mauls your dog and you have to just shoot him. Then he becomes an awesome rug for your hearth. His face snarling in the firelight, even though in life he just looked a bit curious and dumb like a gas station attendant who hasn’t done math in fifteen years trying to figure out a piece of long division.
If I didn’t have to fuck I’d move to Montana. Cold clean snows, a big garden; big blackberry patch like you would find in the woods when you were a kid and come out looking like the Passion of the Christ. A wife who would home can these berries. Scold me for eating too many fresh; that’s a jar of preserves you’re gonna miss in the winter. I will look up guiltily with my lips purple and give her one of those chimp grins with seeds in my teeth. Incorrigible. She’ll playfully bat me with her wooden spoon, which she has boiled to prevent botulism. My wife is no home canning slouch.
Little towheaded kids running around, swimming in the creek; I have given them a very serious lecture on staying away from rattlesnakes. Dad is usually jovial so it’s a little scary when he’s serious. The rattlesnake is more scared of you than you are of him. Freezer with an elk in it. My wife is sick of elk jerky; we all are. We are sick of elk stew and elk fritters and elk salad and elk whateverthefuck but it’s going to be the better part of a decade before we are done eating this god damn elk. Elk chili. She is sick of conscientiously braising game meats so it’s not like biting into a fan belt when you try to eat it. Just once she would like to fry something in a pan for five minutes and be done. Just once she would like to order some fucking Chinese, but it’s the god damn Pony Express out here. There are no Chinese people in Montana. A guy would have to haul those little paper cartons over a mountain pass on a mule to get Chinese food here.
But yeah… just a cabin in a big field surrounded by flowers and animals. Big clouds at sunset; big thunderstorms. Once I find a woman I’m going to take her away there. Live on a little compound.
That’s what I want. A wife and towheaded kids and we can talk to each other and then do the rest of our talking on the internet. Because the things that make me happy are the sky, plants, and animals. The squirrel who drinks from my cat’s water bowl, who tries to get her paws on the rim and her little head at water level but just ends up tipping the bowl over and drinking the runoff– work beats the shit out of me, and I’m always hung over, but this ne’er-do-well thirsty squirrel makes me smile every time. A hummingbird drinking from a flower. Hawks circling and they do that “screeeeeee” just like on TV, echoing through the canyons as though life were returning from a commercial break on Northern Exposure. Things that make me smile are squirrels and flowers and hawks; things that make me miserable are offices and traffic and phones. Liars and hacks; hustlers; loud pushy cruel Hollywood jerkoffs. Give me a rural mountain pastor with a secret small penis humiliation porn stash every time.
Now all I need is the wife. Someone who shares this dream with me. Wake up with the dawn, look out at the meadow, smile at our towheaded kids, fresh trout from the stream for breakfast; live a simpler life. Someone who wants to get rid of this corruption of the spirit with me and sit on the porch and sing and talk in the twilight; you home can the berries and I’ll protect you from the wolves.
the whole "old people referring to chatgpt as 'chat' and thinking kids are referring to chatgpt when they talk about 'asking chat'" thing is an amazing little cultural artifact
A guy goes into a store and asks the clerk, “I’d like some Polish sausage.”
The clerk looks at him and says, “Are you Polish?”
The guy, clearly offended, says, “Well, yes I am. But let me ask you: if I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for German sausage, would you ask if I was German? Or if I had asked for a taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? Huh? Would ya?”
The clerk says, “Well, no…”
With deep self-righteous indignation, the guy says, “Well, alright then, why the hell did you ask if I’m Polish just because I asked for Polish sausage?”
The clerk says, “Because this is a hardware store.”
The easiest way to do some returning to tradition that you can start today is signing and dancing. Until 80 years ago, for the entirety of human civilisation, the basic past time and socialisation and game, that everyone partook in every single day, was singing. We exchanged singing together with watching TV, is the short version. A big part of why you feel weird is because you are not singing every day. Not because you're supposed to be good at it or have it sound good or anything, but because you are a bird and it's just what humans do. Diogenes was right for the wrong reasons. Especially today in our post lockdowns + politics fear + ipad isolation, where people are physically talking less than ever, some people barely talking at all and living exclusively online, you physically need to use your diaphragm, or it will have run on effects on your entire physical Existance. Because you are a bird and it's just what you are supposed to do
When you think about the idea of free will today, it is most often contextualized as the choice between two options. A cross in the road - but both paths lead "forward". I think this framing is the cause of so much semantic confusion and philosophical uncertainty on the topic. I think the question of free will is only this way in thought experiments, and never that way in any other context - that is, "real life", for lack of a better term. In real life free will is not being able to say A or B, but saying Yes or, crucially, No.
Thesis statement: free will is not the ability to plan ahead and make the logical-rational optimizing choice between two options. That is better termed "planning" and "long time preference". Free will is rather, simply, the ability to say No. The ability to recognize a bad deal and opting out. "if everyone else was jumping off a bridge, would you do it too?"
A joke on the Internet is that only autistic people have true agency, the implication being that they are impervious to social pressures and can make cold rational judgements. They won't jump off the bridge. But they also won't do a lot of positive things and pointless socialization, because they can't compute the rational benefit of it.
An alcoholic can recognize with every fiber of his being that his life and behavior is a bad deal, but no matter how high IQ he is and how well he can argue and document and explain what the rationally optimal thing to do is - quit - he can still keep drinking all his life, and just spend all of it thinking about how bad and stupid it all is.
Free will is the ability to opt out of a raw deal. The existentialists said the same thing in so many words: the first question of philosophy is, should I kill myself? That is: is life a raw deal? If so, and if reason is the ultimate virtue, then there is only one calculation, one outcome. And yet - even the pessimists don't kill themselves. They write philosophy.
A fundamentally new phenomenon the modern human must contend with, is the screens and what's on them. What is on them is, the proverbial car crash. That's why the Internet is addicting - it is all pornographic, violent, and transgressive. Every time you open op a smartphone app, you are fundamentally the exact same as a 14 year old watching snuff videos. The market is just saturated enough that it can cater to any degree of depravity, or lack thereof. If gore is too much for you, you can watch Ben Shapiro own libs. Or you can watch other people own Ben Shapiro.
The evolutionary bottleneck we are living through, that is dividing the world into a large group of brain damaged serfs, and a tiny group of something else, is selecting for the ability to look away from a car crash. Opting out of a bad deal. "If philosophy wasn't real, it would be necessary to invent it".
The media-technical environment we live in today is radically different from any other time in human history, and billions of dollars and untold hours of manpower has been spent optimizing ways to exploit evolutionary behaviors. If you own a smart phone, you will be living in a casino every day for the rest of your life. And famously the house always wins. The only way to survive a casino is to set a number, before you start, of x value you are willing to SPEND, regardless of the amount you win. You can beat this system the same way. That's the bottleneck. That's the game.
The reason you can't look away from a car crash is because in nature, it is important to you. You may have to intervene, and the tragedy will impact you, at least socially. You are a social animal, and the mere act of watching death violence and carnage, impacts you - there is no "only viewing". The voyeur is a participant. And today, you are watching car crashes every hour of the day, because a system has been put in place, that you volunteered to be a part of, that monetizes your attention - your viewing - your voyeurism. Every time you watch a car crash, someone makes a dollar, and you lose a part of your soul. You are damaged forever.
Decide how much you are willing to lose.
