Today I visited the fire ravaged Gul Plaza. It was a very dispiriting and depressing experience. In spending time there and talking to shop owners, workers and others I found out that:
1) The fire started in a plastic or artificial flowers shop on the ground floor around 10:00 pm last night.
2) There was one unobstructed stairwell to descend from the 2nd and 3rd floor to the ground floor and because of excessive smoke on the ground floor, people from upper floors couldn’t come down to escape.
3) There were no fire escape stairs from upper floors that people could use to exit the building.
4) All upper floor windows were grilled and only one grill on the first floor was broken after several hours by shop workers and private citizens.
5) Fire tenders (or trucks) didn’t show up for 2 hours and this allowed the fire to engulf the entire building. As of 4:30 pm local time, about eighteen and a half hours after the fire, it was still raging and wasn’t put out.
6) Fire tenders access was very difficult because MA Jinnah Road has been blocked in the centre due to the construction of Green Line corridor for the last 5 years.
7) People talked about between 50 to 150 people still missing and feared trapped in the building.
8) No specialised equipment was used or a way made for rescuers to go inside the building and reduce trapped citizens.
9) When all is told, it will be several citizens dead and billions lost in property.
10) Buildings collapsing and catching fire have become all too frequent in Karachi. Citizens are dying. But would this latest horrific incident bring any change in PPP governance priority?
The referee didn't check the coin, the presenter didn't announce whether it was heads or tails but sasta Bollywood actor Surya just said we'll bowl first straight away. BCCI had made it a joke. Change your name brother @ICC
Non-Karachiites, I say this in the nicest way I can, please stop talking about Karachi's politics. You do not understand them, simply because you do not live in the city.
