Faf's storyline is incredible. I love AB & Faf (I'm one of the biggest AB fans & I initially started rooting for Faf because he was AB's friend! ๐). Avid cricket lovers will know Faf & AB went to the same school (Affies), were childhood buddies & played cricket together. Both of them were the top guns in their early teens, before the maverick AB had a massive growth spurt & became the boy wonder who made his SA debut at 20 in 2004.
At this time, Faf was nowhere near the picture & had to slog it out in domestic. The call up won't come, so much so he moved to Lancashire to become a Kolpak player in 2008-2009. He almost became another Kevin Pietersen & could have played for England, but AB convinced him to stay back in SA & Faf decided to give one final shot & finally only made his T20I debut for SA in Sept 2012. At this point, AB was already box office billing, established superstar across all formats. Both were 28.
Faf started late. If you are a cricketer who's starting your international career at 27-28, very rarely will you be able to achieve a legend status (Rare ex: Hussey) because the shelf life of a sportsman is less. But Faf has had other ideas. He's put in a solid 12-13 years of cricketing service & still going strong at 40, plucking catches out of thin air & scoring 50s & captaining his team to play offs.
Faf had to wait his time to captain SA when AB was at the helm, but ended captaining for a longer duration across formats than AB (who largely captained only ODIs). AB retired in 2018. Faf continued for 3 more years.
AB, the maverick, delighted RCB fans between 2011-2021 & retired in 2021. It's 2024 & Faf is still going strong still showing no signs of any dip in his batting ability at 40. AB is now doing 360ยฐ Live Shows on his YT Channel cheering for RCB from home.
Having started late, Faf has now achieved enough in cricket to be acknowledged as a 'Legend' by all cricket fans. Look at his IPL resume: 2 time IPL Champion with CSK, playing 2 of clutchest knocks in 2018 Q1 vs SRH & 2021 Finals vs KKR where he was the POTM. Captained RCB to playoffs twice & clutched up in the knockout match vs CSK with a 50 + incredible captaincy + an outrageous catch. He's done ok I guess. What a player.
Maybe in a couple of years time, when both have a Braai in Centurion, AB can tell Faf how proud he is of his bud for making it big through sheer resolve, grit, bloody mindedness, not giving up & continued strive for excellence.
(Written from memory, apologies if there are timeline lags here & there).
King Kohli's numbers in succesful run chases in ODIs:
Innings - 96
Runs - 5786
Average - 90.40
100s - 23
50s - 25
2019 World Cup la ye semis thavira most of the innings la looked like a million bucks. But 9 innings la only 5 fifties without a nooru. That was very unlike Kohli in ODIs. Edhaadhu match oru 20 thaanditaale, "Irukku, inniku oru nooru not out irukku" ngra feel tharuvaapla especially while chasing. But that's the beauty of cricket. Against Australia, it looked like he deserved a hundred and that would have been one of his best ODI hundreds. And against Bangladesh, it looked like he'll be not out in the 80s but in the end, he went crazy to reach a hundred. But today's knock was all about the calmness Kohli provided to the run chase. 100 to win apo Kuldeep eh number 8 vandhurundhaalum the form Kohli was in tonight, "Kandippa Kuldeep ku kooda batting solli kuduthu 50 adikka vechurupaan" level. 2022 T20 World Cup la ye it looked like he was back to enjoying his batting. Indha World Cup la hunger + calmness oda therikka vidraapla.
Orey oru aasai dhaan. Nov 19th finals win pannitu Gill should repeat about Kohli what Kohli said about Sachin Paaji after the 2011 finals. Adhukulla innum oru 3-4 hundreds from Kohli, avlo dhaan vera onnum illa.
These people queued up to donate their blood. Nobody checked what the religion of the injured is. At the end of the day, this is who we are. Itโs not the politicians &media who spew venom on a daily basis to make extra money, get more power. Itโs people who care for other people.
