Nokia could have invented the iPhone. Three years before Apple did, a Nokia engineer walked into a meeting in Finland with a working prototype: a touchscreen phone with full internet access. Management killed it. The device looked too expensive and too risky to sell. The same year, Nokia also rejected a proposal for an online app store. Apple would launch the same idea four years later.
In 2007, Nokia controlled 40% of the world's mobile phone market and was worth more than $150 billion. By 2013, it had sold its phone business to Microsoft for $7.2 billion. The company that defined the cell phone became irrelevant in less time than it takes most kids to finish high school.
In 2016, two professors from INSEAD and Aalto University spent years interviewing 76 Nokia executives, engineers, and consultants for a research paper. Their conclusion: nobody at the company could have an uncomfortable conversation.
Senior leaders were described as "extremely temperamental." One consultant remembered then-CEO Jorma Ollila shouting at people "at the top of his lungs" in front of fifteen other vice presidents. Middle managers learned the rules fast. Bad news got you fired, so they stopped delivering it.
The engineers knew Nokia's operating system could not compete with what Apple was building for the iPhone. One design team submitted 500 separate proposals to fix it between 2001 and 2009. Not a single one got approved. When a middle manager once suggested that a colleague push back against a top executive, the colleague refused. He "didn't have the courage; he had a family and small children."
The top managers were also afraid, just of different things. They worried about looking weak to investors. So they publicly defended the old operating system while privately knowing it was dying. The middle managers heard the demand for optimism and supplied it. For four years, the people who knew the company was sinking could not get that message to the people who could do something about it.
Researchers call this shoot-the-messenger culture. It shows up in cockpit recordings before plane crashes, in hospital records before preventable deaths, and in the investigations of the 2008 financial crisis. The cost of avoiding a difficult conversation is always paid later, with interest.
Nokia's case is unusual because the math is so clean: the silence cost roughly $143 billion in market value and an entire company. The discomfort would have cost a few bad meetings.
Yesterday was a long day.
I was called for questioning in connection with a case that I believed had no merit, and I attended the questioning to present my version. However, the police arrested me at 5.30 PM.
I was granted bail at 10 PM, and the Hon’ble Duty Judge clearly stated that he saw no offence in the case. He also said that he saw no mens rea and failed to understand why I had even been arrested.
Grateful to @RaviSharmaTalks and @sidcool2302, the wonderful lawyers who helped me through this.
Thankful to the many people, both online and offline, who supported me. I’m truly grateful. Of course, there are many who dislike you and use such opportunities to strike harder when you are down, but that’s fair game. It was your day, and you took it. I can take those blows and come back.
At times like these, one realises the importance of ideological support. The people who stood by me at the most crucial juncture were neither close friends nor relatives, but those with whom I am bound by ideology. And it delivered for me when it mattered most.
This incident has added many new layers of perspective, most importantly the ones we usually miss in the melee of day-to-day social media discourse.
I’ll write about the specifics of this case another day. For now, I just want to say thank you so much to everyone who has been a well-wisher. I’m grateful.
Thank you for monitoring the situation.
The tragedy in Chhattisgarh is deeply painful. 20 families have lost everything. Proper compensation, livelihood support for the families, and a thorough investigation are non-negotiable.
But naming Shri @AnilAgarwal_Ved Ji in the FIR before any investigation raises serious concerns. He is a self-made man from a humble and backward community background who built a global enterprise from scratch. He had no role in that plant's operations.
When accidents happen in PSU plants or Railways, do we name the Chairman? We do not. The same standard must apply to the private sector too.
Investigate first. Establish responsibility based on evidence. Then act.
India's #ViksitBharat vision needs people like Shri Anil Agarwal to keep investing and building. That happens only when investors trust the system. 🇮🇳
To the Principal, staff and students of Miranda College, Delhi University, you need to respect the Chief Guest you invite for your events. I was there for a no show! I have posted the videos and pix here so that you learn that tardiness equals to disrespect. No staff and 4-5 students. Flow chart & evidence posted
One detail from this Iran war should make every serious state sit up: credible reporting says Israeli leaders were shown an image of Khamenei’s body after it was recovered by Mossad agents - and that Israel had visibility on his fate faster than Iran could even confirm the death of it's supreme leader and shape the narrative. That’s not “tech”. That’s HUMINT + penetration.
Satellites don’t tell you who is in which room at what time. Signals don’t always survive encryption and discipline. What wins you wars and prevents surprises is human access so-urces, moles, defectors, recruited assets - the messy, thankless work of being inside the enemy’s bloodstream.
Israel has no luxury of being lazy at intelligence. It sits in a hostile neighbourhood with actors who openly want it erased. So it builds networks that aren’t “near the border.” They’re near the decision-makers. That’s what survival looks like when geography is unforgiving.
Now bring that lens to India. When you live next to Pakistan’s terror ecosystem and a Bangladesh theatre that keeps throwing up radical modules, you don’t get to be sentimental about “soft power” as a substitute for hard intelligence. You need early warning, deep penetration, counter-infiltration, and ruthless disruption - before the plot becomes a headline.
And this is exactly where the armchair moralists fail India. They love questioning operations after the fact. They hate the boring investments before the fact: intel budgets, source protection, language capability, field tradecraft, inter-agency fusion, and the political spine to back covert work without leaking it for TRPs.
Pop culture and superhit movies like Dhurandhar tells the story really well but makes it look stylish - one hero, one mission, one punchline. Real HUMINT though is the opposite: years of patience, ugly risks, zero credit, and often no medal because the best outcome is “nothing happened.”
This is not about chest-thumping. This is about statecraft. The world is moving into an age where wars are decided by who sees first, knows first, and shapes first. Israel gets that. India must get that - permanently. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and our intelligence apparatus, NEW INDIA definitely gets it.
Because 'terrorist harbouring neighbours' don’t send calendar invites before they strike. They send handlers, money, propaganda, and sleepers. The only answer is being inside that machinery early enough to break it.
If you want deterrence, stop thinking intelligence is an accessory. It’s the foundation.

🧵 THREAD: How @myntra turned my anniversary gift into a nightmare, then tried to silence me with ILLEGAL tactics.
Every online shopper needs to read this.
1/ Jan 14: Ordered 3 items (₹12,233 on a credit card) as a 4th anniversary gift from @myntra - trusted them for YEARS as an Insider Member.
What arrived?
❌ Counterfeit (at least looked like that) Ritu Kumar (₹300 street quality)
❌ USED kurti (wrong size pair, also reeking of someone's perfume)
❌ Wrong size sweater
Anniversary ruined.
This is against popular opinion.
I fully agree contribution from Elon Musk to the world of technology and business is immense. In that sense, he is a rare individual.
Equally I feel he is manipulative, lot of claims he make about future is only his views and not substantiated by any reason or logic. He says everyone will have everything in next 10 to 20 years and money would lose relevance. If he really believes that, he wouldn't have fought for trillion dollar package for himself and focusing on getting multi-trillion valuations for his companies.
He is subtly and surely setting the narratives he or his backers want by manipulating Twitter algorithm and Grok.
He has become so powerful, he changes the flags and maps of the countries at his whims and fancies, confronts even head of nations, controls the news flow and so on.
Even I've to convey all this only through the platform owned by him shows his extreme power and dominance.
He is not as good as he is claiming to be.
DUTA election and campaigning process you must have to see. Education is no guarantee even for the likes of professors of Delhi University to look beyond Jaat/Gurjar/Bihari etc lobby (that too inside the classroom, infront of the students).
The ban on VIP convoys will actually show politicians how much time people waste in traffic jams
The politicians ironically increase the problem by blocking the roads for their convoys
The solution is allowing only educated voters to elect politicans
