Found in a sealed tomb near Rome, this ring was still resting on the finger of a noblewoman named Aebutia Quarta.
The face trapped inside the rock crystal isn't her husband's--it's her son, Titus Carvilius Gemellus, who died at just 18. She had the ring made after his death, commissioning the crystal to be carved as a lens so his face would look ‘alive’ and seem to follow her gaze. She wore his presence on her hand until the very day archaeologists found her.
