#1 Infrastructure matters ARE engineering matters

The Bronkhorstspruit water crisis, and the wider crisis of raw sewage being discharged into our rivers and oceans, raises serious questions about the role of engineers and the engineering profession.
Are witnessing a dereliction of professional duty by engineers and engineering professionals entrusted with protecting public health, infrastructure and the environment?
We need to establish where authority sits, where professional engineering advice is being ignored, and where accountability ultimately lies.
Let’s fix this country. Let us hope that the @PublicProtector's investigation helps uncover the root causes of these failures, strengthens accountability, empowers engineering professionals to fulfil their responsibilities, and ultimately restores affordable, safe and reliable service delivery to our communities.

A dark traffic light is not a broken bulb. It is a broken system.
See a junction the way a control engineer does:
- a signal controller that needs clean, backed-up power
- detectors and cabling protected from theft and vandalism
- timing plans updated as traffic grows
- a maintenance plan signed off by a competent professional
Fail one, and the whole junction fails. Pedestrians, taxis, ambulances and learners pay the price.
Electronic, electrical, control and transport engineers, with technologists and technicians, make a safe crossing real every day. An independent Engineer-General would ask what no tender report asks: is the design right for our conditions, is maintenance funded, is the person in charge qualified?
Safe movement is part of a dignified life. Let us engineer it that way.

The Bronkhorstspruit water crisis, and the wider crisis of raw sewage being discharged into our rivers and oceans, raises serious questions about the role of engineers and the engineering profession.
Are engineering professionals being prevented from doing their jobs by political interference and dysfunctional procurement, legal, finance and HR processes?

@PublicProtector, the water crisis is an engineering matter. Please bring qualified engineers into investigations where infrastructure and service delivery are at the heart of the problem. Ultimately, a Chapter 9 Engineer-General should provide independent engineering advice to the Public Protector. #LGE2026 #water #engineering
JRA should organise an engineering hackathon to rethink traffic lights for our conditions: less resale value, stronger protection against vandalism and cheaper modular repairs. Involve SABS from the start. These repair costs warrant a serious design review.
Independent bodies are meant to act impartially and independently, subject only to the Constitution and the law. The OR Tambo Lecture is a timely call for the leadership of our Chapter 9 institutions to help rebuild public trust. They can and must do better, particularly in protecting the public interest and supporting the engineering profession’s contribution to society. https://t.co/cHzgWJywzj

Communities have cried out about water and failing services for far too long. Human rights cannot be separated from the engineering infrastructure required to realise them. @SAHRCommission should bring independent engineering expertise into service-delivery investigations.
We need a Chapter 9 Engineer-General. @DepartmentPWI

Every pothole is a report card the road writes on itself.
It grades drainage, design and upkeep, honestly. Safe roads are a right engineers deliver. Let an Engineer-General read the marks before motorists do.

"SA has betrayed ideals of freedom fighters" ~ Madlanga
Dear @GovernmentZA, @ParliamentofRSA & #LGE2026 Candidates,
#ChangingThingsSA We can reverse the betrayal of our people by putting engineers where they belong: at the forefront of protecting human dignity and driving socio-economic development. Continuing to appoint unqualified people to engineering posts deepens that betrayal, weakens accountability and creates conditions for corruption.

Water pollution and persistent infrastructure failure cannot continue without accountability. We must ask: How many criminal cases has @DWS_RSA opened for violations of the National Water Act? How many prosecutions and convictions have followed?
The time has come for the engineering profession to help hold all infrastructure stakeholders accountable, institutions and individuals alike, whether qualified or unqualified, for decisions and actions that compromise infrastructure, service delivery and the public interest.
This is why South Africa needs an independent Chapter 9 Engineer-General.

Water management expert Prof. Anja du Plessis says recent water challenges in Bronkhorstspruit have been ongoing for many years. This occurs against the backdrop of recent drinking water contamination in Makhanda, Tshwane and Bezuidenhout Valley in Johannesburg. Du Plessis says the community has lost trust in the municipality. She says municipalities ought to communicate better.

Don't ask when the lights return. Ask who signed off the substation maintenance plan.
A lit home is a right made real by competent electrical engineers. An Engineer-General would hold municipalities to sound asset care. @SAIEE, let us lead.

Clean water is a right only engineers can make real at the tap.
Dosing and testing are engineering duties. An Engineer-General would audit plant capacity before taps turn unsafe. Put professionals in every plant.

No engineer ever got elected mayor. Yet every mayor depends on engineers to succeed. Perhaps it's time politicians listened. #EngineeringVote#LGE2026#BronkhorstspruitWater
