#QuizLady: A feel-good comedy done right. You know where the story is going from the start, but on its way, there are terrific laughs, unexpectedly heartfelt moments, and some uplifting self-actualization. Awkwafina and Sandra Oh have a natural chemistry that works flawlessly.

I would just like to share what I witnessed yesterday morning at Bagels N' Buns.

I was waiting at the counter for an order and a homeless man asked one of the employees to please fill his half gallon, plastic milk carton with water.

The worker said “what are you going to use it for?”

In my head, I was thinking he was going to say that if he wanted it for drinking he has to buy a bottle blah blah blah…

The man said “to drink”, the employee told him to “please go over to the cooler and get whatever size water he’d like.”

He then filled up the milk carton as requested.

The man thanked the employee for the water but said he was really hungry and could use a meal.

The worker Benny said “no problem! What would you like?”

The man gave him his order and he got to it with a smile on his face. I then went over to the register to ask Kathie (who is AMAZING) if I could give her money for him, to use a credit for a few meals.

She replied “Janessa, that is so kind, but we feed him whenever he is hungry.

He always has a meal here, when he needs.”

They’ve been doing it for years!!!

Another reason for me to love them over there.

I was really moved by the whole situation. I felt the need to share this because when businesses give from the heart, when they are hurting the most, they deserve a shout out ❤️🥯 BIG love shout to Mike, Katie, and the whole crew at Bagels n Buns in NYC.”❤️

In 1926, thirteen black men put together their savings and founded Safe Bus Company, making it the largest black owned bus company at that time.

It was formed in Winston-Salem to serve the black neighborhoods due to segregation and operated till 1972.

Thirteen Black men put together their life-savings and purchasing shares of stock for $100,000; forming Safe Bus Co, Inc. on May 26, 1926, Safe Bus Co became the largest African-American owned bus company in the nation.

The company grew large and fast and was at one point named the largest black-owned transportation company in the world. In 1955, Safe Bus grossed $825,000. At it’s prime, the company carried 15,000 fares a day, grossed $18,000 a week and had 75 employees.

Fares started at five cents in the early operating days and grew as the company expanded. The number of buses expanded as well, from 35 to 42. Safe Bus operated in 20 percent of the city.
Black bus drivers made, around $1.60 to $2.50 an hour. “That was more than school teachers were making then.”
By 1968, Safe Bus provided transportation to all city residents. The company took on more routes, but finding drivers proved difficult.

Despite more routes, after integration, Safe Bus started to lose money. Old attitudes about segregation made it difficult to make a profit, and the company lost 60 percent of riders, according to the Winston-Salem Transit Authority.
“When the whites started riding Safe Bus, they thought they had to go to the back,”.

After integration Black people Started riding on white-owned buses so they could sit up front with white people. Stockholders voted to sell the company to the city in 1972. The Winston-Salem Transit Authority became responsible for all public.

Today at ASMP, Dr. Brantley held a Focused Math Workshop for offenders who only needed to pass the math portion of the GED test to receive their diploma. Thanks to our educators and staff who continuously work with offenders in helping them reach their educational goals.

To assist offenders with reentry planning and preparation, GDC education and counseling staff work exceptionally hard to help offenders reach their goals. This week, their work paid off when 8 residents at Paulding RSAT received their certifications in skill-related completions and celebrated their successful recovery from substance use and release into their communities. Meanwhile, Calhoun SP held a graduation ceremony for 2 Ashland University students and 21 GED graduates.  Offering opportunities for offender rehabilitation is an important part of our mission and we celebrate with those who have committed to their future success.

Today was a day to celebrate, as 13 residents graduated from the Fleet Automotive Maintenance Academy and 6 graduated from the I-CAR Paint & Body program. The skills they learned will assist them in obtaining employment upon release. A HUGE Thank You to the staff members who escorted the students to the academy every day and helped make them successful. @CGTC #ittakesavillage

The Hays SP Offender “All Stars” baseball team played 3 games against the Saints Baseball Team Prison Ministry, winning all 3. The game was enjoyed by both offenders & staff. After each game, the Saints led a worship service for the men who wanted to participate.

As schools around the state are heading back to class, we would like to give a huge shout-out to our facilities that held back to school drives. These supply drives assisted the local communities and staff in ensuring that school-aged children would have the necessities they needed to start the year off right!
