Delighted to be awarded funding under this programme for a project with the amazing @manc_italian and other brilliant colleagues at @Oxford_VGG and @TheJohnRylands. We'll be working on print and difference.
JUST ANNOUNCED: Schmidt Sciences has awarded $11M to 23 teams globally for our Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI).

This is a fundamental problem for machine learning (ML) because ML models need to be trained on input-output pairs ie problem-solution pairs for language models.
To make them output "I don't know", you need to collect all problem-"I don't know" pairs which is not possible.
Come and join us. We're looking for a Research Assistant/Associate in Heritage Science to lead on the 2D GMM analysis of letter outlines extracted from high-resolution photographs of the faces of typographic punches, and Baskerville's printed pages.
In short, language models & in general, generative models are doing a sort of "soft" retrieval - a result reconstructed by weighted averaging of different snippets/parts destilled from the original data.
They don't think nor reason.
My team at Oxford is recruiting three new Senior Research Software Engineers.
If you can see yourself working with researchers & innovative methods to build & implement digital tools to explore culture & ideas, this may be for you!

For public service improvements and productivity gains, the people who will make sense of AI are not the people making AI. I see it as a social experiment. We need to quickly expand the pool of collaborators. We need new people asking new questions.
