A 24-year-old Canadian tourist died after falling from a train in Thailand on 21st March 2024.

The man was traveling with his girlfriend from Bangkok to Koh Tao on Rapid No. 167 night train. He reportedly went to smoke a cigarette at an open door between carriages at around 10:20pm.

It is believed he was either sitting on the steps or leaning out of the doorway when the train passed through a station with a new elevated platform which hit him and caused him to fall from the train. His body was discovered the following day by a Cambodian workman.

* It is illegal to smoke on trains in Thailand and there are signs throughout the train saying the fine is 5,000 baht. However, many people smoke between carriages or in the toilets and are ignored by train conductors. Cigarettes are also openly sold by vendors walking up and down the train.

There was a long queue at the Thai embassy in Yangon today as Myanmar's people rushed to leave the country following the junta's announcement of compulsory military service for all young men and women.

The move was announced last Saturday, ordering all men aged 18 to 35 and women aged 18 to 27 to serve at least two years under military command.

This decision coincides with the Myanmar military's struggle to cope with escalating offensives by resistance forces. Meanwhile, the civilian National Unity Government has declared the junta a "terrorist group" that imposed an illegal law due to a lack of legal mandate to enforce a legitimate one, as reported by The Irrawaddy.
