These portrayals emerged in the 14th century, a period marked by the Black Death and the prevalence of mass mortality, which made death an immediate reality.

In music, one prominent example of the Danse Macabre is a tone poem composed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1874. This piece draws inspiration from an old French superstition and features a solo violin tuned to E-flat, known as the "devil's interval."
