It is entirely unbecoming of the Prime Minister of India to be celebrating the inauguration of a temple in Paris while dead bodies of students are being pulled out of the rubble of a hostel in New Delhi.

After a scandal involving women being asked not to work at the Eiffel Tower during the BAPS visit, the MEA has said the Indian government had nothing to do with the matter.

If the Indian government had nothing to do with the matter, then why was the ambassador present at the inauguration? Why was the Prime Minister speaking with the Indian flag in the background, as the Prime Minister of India and not as a private citizen, at the inauguration of this temple?

When the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple was inaugurated in Ayodhya, it was explicitly made clear that the Prime Minister is attending in a personal capacity. How does he attend the inauguration of a temple in an official capacity now? How does he talk about the India-France bilateral relationship at that address?

Now you cannot run away from these difficult questions.

India's ambassador to UNESCO is busy defending BAPS. BAPS is a private limited company in France. The temple itself claims that tens of millions of euros were used in the building of this temple that makes it historic. Where did this money come from? How has it gone into a private limited company? What is the accountability for promoting a temple like this?

Does the Prime Minister promote all temples that are opened across the world? Does the Prime Minister promote gurdwaras that are opened across the world? Does the Prime Minister promote mosques that are open across the world?

Or have we stopped pretending we are a secular country?

Finally, this has become a moment for the far right in France to target Indians. That's racist, and that racist hatred must be called out, but that hatred cannot be used as a justification for labour rights violations at that temple.

In New Jersey, serious allegations were made that Dalit labourers were exploited, paid below minimum wage. Forty people apparently have died of silicosis, according to some estimates, because of that stone cutting. Who will take responsibility for these actions?

Who will answer questions as to why the land was donated to BAPS in France, why land was donated in Abu Dhabi to the same BAPS? Is there pressure from the Indian government in doing so?

Difficult questions cannot be avoided, and certainly not right now under the guise of religion.

मार्च में NIA ने कहा- वह बिना परमिट मिज़ोरम गया, अवैध रूप से म्यांमार की सीमा पार की और वहाँ armed groups को हथियार एवं drone warfare की ट्रेनिंग दी।

इसके बाद अमेरिकी विदेश मंत्री दिल्ली आते हैं। अमेरिकी राजदूत Sergio Gor भारत के विदेश सचिव के सामने उसका मामला उठाते हैं।

और अब NIA की पहली चार्जशीट से UAPA यानी आतंकवाद की धाराएँ ही गायब हैं।

सवाल तो फिर भी खड़ा है- छह महीने तक जेल में रखने के बाद भी आतंकवाद के आरोप चार्जशीट में क्यों नहीं टिके?

इसके दो ही अर्थ दिखाई देते हैं-

या तो आतंकवाद के आरोप शुरू से खोखले थे। फिर एक व्यक्ति को छह महीने तक आतंकवादी बताकर जेल में रखने की जवाबदेही किसकी है?

या फिर मोदी सरकार एक बार फिर अमेरिकी दबाव के आगे झुक गई।

देश जानना चाहता है- मामला राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा का था या विदेश नीति के नाम पर राजनीतिक सौदेबाज़ी का?

3 सितंबर को दिल्ली में मुख्यमंत्री रेखा गुप्ता जी से सवाल पूछने की कोशिश करने पर महिला पत्रकारों शाहीन ख़ान और नफ़ीसा ख़ान को दिल्ली पुलिस द्वारा हिरासत में लेकर साकेत थाने ले जाने, मारपीट, गाली-गलौज और धमकी देने के आरोप बेहद गंभीर हैं।

वहीं, पूर्व @BBCHindi पत्रकार हुदा जरीवाला को सहारनपुर मस्जिद विध्वंस पर सवाल उठाने और मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ जी की कार्यशैली की आलोचना करने पर यूपी पुलिस द्वारा गिरफ्तार कर जेल भेजे जाने की खबर भी बेहद चिंताजनक है।

महिला पत्रकारों ने मारपीट के संबंध में FIR दर्ज करने के लिए शिकायत दी, लेकिन अब तक कोई कार्रवाई न होना पुलिस की जवाबदेही पर गंभीर सवाल खड़े करता है। वहीं, हुदा जरीवाला की गिरफ्तारी भी प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता और सत्ता से सवाल पूछने के अधिकार पर गंभीर सवाल खड़े करती है।

संबंधित राज्य सरकारों से हमारी मांग है कि हुदा जरीवाला को तत्काल रिहा किया जाए और अगर अगले 72 घण्टो में में शाहीन ख़ान और नफ़ीसा ख़ान की शिकायत पर कार्रवाई नहीं हुई, तो मैं स्वयं साकेत पुलिस थाने के बाहर आकर शांतिपूर्ण धरना दूंगा।

मेरे पत्रकार भाइयों और बहनों से अपील है कि एकजुट होकर अपनी साथी पत्रकारों का साथ दें। आज वे हैं, कल आपकी बारी भी हो सकती है।

यह प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता और लोकतंत्र से जुड़ा गंभीर सवाल है।
