#OTD#CivilWar hero Thomas Cass was born in Queens County, Ireland, and 8 months later emigrated to #Boston's NorthEnd. A popular civic, business + militia leader, he was chosen by Governor John Andrew to lead the #Massachusetts#irish 9th regiment in June, 1861. Cass was mortally wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862, and brought back to #Boston, where he died. Visit his statue in Boston Public Garden along the #irishheritagetrail and a plaque at The Prado in the North End from his neighbors. https://t.co/awAqPOObfs #meetboston
On May 26, 1647, the #Massachusetts General Court officially passed a law banning Catholic Jesuit priests from the Bay Colony. This anti-Catholic sentiment, based on Puritan ideology, lasted for centuries in #Boston. https://t.co/nhsxi7Nns1
This Sunday from 9 am to 5pm at @IrishCultureBos, there will be a rugby sevens tournament, Rosie's Ruck, organized by Fontbonne seventh-grader Parker Vitagliano-Hill to raise funds for epilepsy awareness and seizure alert dogs. More info here:

On Friday, May 22, 2026 at 12 Noon, in advance of Memorial Day, the Charitable Irish Society will assemble at the Old Granary Burying Ground on Tremont Street in Boston
@jimfoley@OldNewYork1664 We are the oldest Irish organization in the Americas and our founders were Protestants from Ulster. Catholics were not allowed to join at first.
We are widely credited with the first St. Patrick’s celebration in 1737 though some have argued it should be considered St. Augustine.
On 4/16, we're celebrating Natasha Sumner's new work, Heroes of the Gael: A History of Fionn and the Fianna (Princeton Uni Press, 2026)
Joining Sumner for a discussion of Irish folklore are Geraldine Parsons (Uni of Glasgow), Ciara Ní Riain (Harvard), & Ray Cashman (Indiana Uni)
With @RedSox 2026 home opener on Friday, April 3, sincere shout-out to Charles E. Logue, the #Irish immigrant from #Derry who built @fenwaypark back in 1912. Described by writer #JohnUpdike as "a lyric little bandbox of a park," #fenwaypark is one of America's most beloved landmarks. It is part of Boston's #IrishHeritageTrail, a trail of public landmarks celebrating the #BostonIrish. https://t.co/9Gc8Kr3uJq #meetboston @FenwaySportsMgt@HelloGreenway@RedSoxFund@Derryvisitor
Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️
On March 17th, 1737, more than two dozen Presbyterians who emigrated from the north of Ireland gathered to honor St. Patrick and form the Charitable Irish Society to assist distressed Irishmen in the city.
