Legendary Kenyan distance runner Henry Rono has died at 72 years old, Athletics Kenya announced.

In 1978, he was a sophomore at Washington State and broke the 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase world records over the span of 81 days. He never got to compete at the Olympics due to Kenya’s boycott of the 1976 and 1980 Summer Games. Rono also set the world record for the 5000m again in 1981.

Among his other career highlights:
•3x NCAA XC Champion (1976, 1977, 1979)
•3x NCAA Track Champion
