There’s plenty govt is doing in energy I disagree with, but @mgshanks is widely seen across industry as one of best energy ministers in recent times. He listens, shows genuine interest and committed to finding solutions. We should be glad he’s there (and hope he stays in post!)
I know not everyone likes clean, homegrown power but I’m not sure writing an article about it for the Fabians makes me an enemy of the British public 🥴
The problem with voting Conservative is that half of their members would be happy to join with Reform but many, like Remainer David, prefer the LibDems. If you vote Conservative you have no idea what you'll end up with.
Another significant evolution in Reform's style of politics. Its proposed internment camps will only be built in parts of the country that vote for its rivals.
This is a new departure for UK politics: rejecting the idea of PM-for-all and instead a new partisan style.
Been saying for weeks it feels like early 2020. We could see something happening far away, but thought that it wouldn’t affect us, or only briefly. Oil demand was down 8m barrels/day on average during Covid. Supply is down 11m barrels/day now, so potentially worse than Covid.
As I have written and commented on several times I am amazed that Europe in general and the UK in particular behaves as if it has no idea what’s in store for it if the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed though May (which it will).
We’re now talking energy at the Delphi Forum.
Interesting comment from my predecessor as U.K. Energy Minister, @charles_hendry
COVID led to a fall in oil demand of 8m barrels a day.
Straits of Hormuz leading to a fall in supply of 11m barrels.
Big impact!
Loss of demand for oil during COVID: 8 mln barrels/day. Loss of supply today through Strait of Hormuz: 11 mln barrels/day. We are nowhere near ready for what’s to come - @charles_hendry at the @DelphiEconForum this morning.
Congratulations @MagyarPeterMP on your election victory.
This is an historic moment, not only for Hungary, but for European democracy.
I look forward to working with you for the security and prosperity of both our countries.
It’s not about how much gas we might need to use in the future, but about ensuring as much of the gas we do use comes from our own resources. The PM should use this week’s financial statement to change tack
Delighted to be one of eight former Energy Ministers (Labour, Conservative and SNP) who have written to the PM calling for a rethink on the North Sea. Madness to close down our own resources prematurely and rely more on imports. https://t.co/8VbS1yBo4v
@CharlotteCGill Because under her leadership we went from 14.9% in 2015 to 28.7% in 2017 1 seat to 13 and became the offices opposition in 2016. She revived a once flatlining party.
There is a large group of voters who feel increasingly disconnected from today’s political choices - turned off by populism and looking for competence and realism.
Prosper UK has been formed to support a Conservative Party that is focused on growth, opportunity and responsible government, with respect for our institutions.
We believe Britain can do better, and prosper again.

Millions of centre and centre-right voters aren’t looking for extremes.
They’re looking for an economic offer that feels credible again.
That’s the challenge.
This is a brilliant and crucial initiative, led by two of our most successful election winners @RuthDavidsonPC and @andy4wm who have shown in their own successes that the Conservative Party is at its most effective when it appeals to a broad range of voters.
The Conservatives only win when we're a broad church.
We want to speak to those who feel politically homeless and to work with them - and business - to develop practical, pragmatic policies to improve lives & opportunities.
Exactly this. To win enough seats to form a Government, the Conservative Party needs to win back voters who went to Reform and to the Lib Dems, so it has to be a broad church.
The language of ‘Britain is Broken’ is taken straight from the SNP playbook…people who want to paint a picture of a broken country so they can pitch their snake oil solution of separation as the only better future.
Britain isn’t broken. But it can be a helluva lot better.
I’m incredibly proud to have @Nus_Ghani as my successor in Sussex. She was chosen in an open primary of 400 local residents - Party members and non-members - and has been a great MP. She should be held up as a role model for others not condemned for all she has achieved.
Not scrapping the Energy Profits Levy is a strong contender for the worst decision in the Budget.
Tens of thousands of jobs and billions in taxes and investment.
All lost.
I don’t see how Labour can go into the Scottish elections on this platform. Policies which are too complex to explain on the doorstep and the only major Party hostile to Scotland’s oil and gas industry. It’s not just a NE Scotland issue. It resonates across the whole country.
Oh God it gets worse! Apparently the ban on new licenses “Shows the world you can take bold steps to move away from fossil fuel production.” 🤦♂️
We. Are. Importing. More. Gas. From. Overseas. Than. Ever. Before. 🫠🤪
Britain has become the most expensive place on Earth to construct a nuclear power station.
If plans to build SMRs in Anglesey are to succeed, we need to tackle the root causes of that cost explosion.
My latest for @SpecCoffeeHouse
