@RupertLowe10 The main problem is that families can’t survive on one salary any more. Women have to go to work even if they would rather have children or stay at home with their babies. Being ‘just a mother’ is seen as lazy and shameful by society. The treasury would rather both parents work.

Governments don't produce economic growth, people do - incentivise them! Reward hard work, and you'll end up actually collecting MORE tax.

The UK government effectively slapped a tax on luxury shopping in London for overseas tourists when they removed the ability to claim back VAT for non EU visitors (2021).

Initially luxury retail stores in London had a drop in sales. They responded with a smart idea - if you see something in a London store you like, you can buy it in store but the order will be processed online and the product will be delivered when you return home … thus avoiding the VAT.

… AND if the retail stores are UK companies these sales are now technically not happening in the UK so the retail stores are likely to not be profitable either. They may accumulate losses that can offset taxable profits.

This is a classic example of how high taxes rates create lower taxes collected.

As much as socialists want it not to be true, high tax rates results in lower taxes collected and damage the economy.
