“There’s Mexicans all around the world, not just in Mexico. I’m happy I get a chance to showcase that.” 🇺🇸🇲🇽
Da'vian Kimbrough, who’s eligible for both USMNT and Mexico, spoke about his Mexican pride.
At 13, he became the youngest professional athlete in US sports history.
Now 16, he’s played for the youth national teams of both US and Mexico.
The teenager recently spoke to CBS News Sacramento for Hispanic Heritage Month.
“My mom’s side is Mexican,” Kimbrough said.
“My grandpa, he grew up in Michoacán. Growing up with him, whether it was watching Liga MX games or eating the food that he cooks, traditional dishes, that's kind of where I take most of my main heritage.
“We want to take a trip down to Mexico, where my grandpa grew up, because we feel like it's important to visit and see the foundation of the heritage.
“There's Mexicans all around the world, not just in Mexico.
“So I'm happy that I get the chance to showcase that and hopefully I can be somebody they can look up to.”
Kimbrough was born in Woodland, California to an African-American father and Mexican mother.
He signed a professional contract with Sacramento Republic at 13 and now, he’s on loan to MLS NEXT PRO side North Texas SC.
