Looking back to last year and the incredible collaboration with Candoco and Laban teaching Nigel's work for the 1st time at a UK conservatoire as part of their historical projects. A huge thank you to the wonderful students we so much about Nigel's work through your engagement.
10 years on... always missed.
“My work is a celebration of life and is made with Love.”
A beautiful portrait by Tobias Ek and a poem found in his notebooks which he’d marked out to use as text for Love Me/Miluj mě, a piece he made with NANOHACH in Prague in 2008.
After 5 years of international festival and cinema screenings we are thrilled to announce the digital premiere of YOU. Verbal and physical slapstick suggests darker truths behind love, sex, and relationships. Watch the short film on Vimeo https://t.co/ELvWQFayXt
Celebrating Nigels Legacy 8 years on. A short film taken from Still, created by Nigel for Candoco in 2009. "its always about relationship rather than relationships, and more so in this piece about the loss of that, about losing someone.” @candocodance https://t.co/hptDb6RUMS
A 30 minute look into the incredible mind of Nigel and the complexity and emotion of the first re-staging of a full piece since his death at NDCW. A visually rich video discussion with Gary Clarke and Fearghus Ó Conchúir. https://t.co/E9MsBTvekJ @NDCW

BE ME: "Am I asking too much? Yes? No? I think i give as much as I want, so why not? Is this possible? Or is it a dream? Am I dreaming? Is this a dream? Where is he? Where is he?
8 Years.
I love this photo of Nigel. Taken when he was in Ludus in the early 80's. Slightly blurred. Impossible to capture. Causing Trouble. Laughing. Miss You.
@LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag DV8's work is characterised by a desire to question received attitudes and beliefs, and has frequently addressed issues such as gender and sexual identity. ‘My Sex Our Dance’, proved a powerful response to prejudice surrounding AIDS and the infamous Section 28.
Gay History Month - we are looking back to celebrate My Sex Our Dance and the 2018 Rainbow Plaque at Yorkshire Dance: the plaque celebrates people that have influenced our LGBT+ heritage. @LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag Link to the FB post https://t.co/6pg6hmZzEF
@LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag Nigel Co-founded DV8 with Lloyd Newson - My Sex Our Dance was the first work they co-created and performed together. Found in Nigel's archive are the notes he made whilst devising this piece; "we must love one another or die", quoting Auden’s anti war poem September 1,1939.
@LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag The idea was born from watching a BBC documentary about dance in Leeds from the late 80s, featuring Nigel Charnock and Lloyd Newson rehearsing in our studios with the internationally-acclaimed DV8 Physical Theatre.
@LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag Yorkshire dance’s Wieke Eringa goes on to explain how the project came about..“The plaque at Yorkshire Dance commemorates the many seminal gay and queer artists who have made work in our studios over 37 years.
@LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag It’s a timely reminder that our freedom of expression seems forever under threat and so we should always be there to fight for it, with love.
@LGBTHM@GayArtists@YorkshireDance @gaytimesmag Ideas of personal freedom were explored throughout all Nigel's work - he was acutely aware of the barbarous power of fascism and nationalism and its impact on personal liberty.
Delighted that YOU is having its Canadian premiere at The Quartiers Danses Festival in the wonderful Cinémathèque Québécoise. 10th Sept at 6pm. We've translated the film into French for the screening.
