There is another side of cancer that people don’t always talk about, the financial burden.

Treatment is expensive. There are surgeries, investigations, scans, medicines, chemotherapy, hospital visits and travel expenses. A parent may also have to take time off from work to look after their child.

For families without medical coverage or enough financial resources, the diagnosis brings two worries at once. One is the fear for their child’s health. The other is how they will manage to pay for the treatment.

Some families have insurance or medical coverage through their employers. Some rely on families for help. Others have nowhere to turn.

But the fear is the same. Every parent wants to do whatever it takes to help their child get better, and it is heartbreaking when money becomes an obstacle.

No child’s chances of receiving treatment should depend on how much their family can afford.

If you are going through this, please remember that accepting support is nothing to be ashamed of. Sometimes, families need others to stand beside them, both emotionally and financially. No family should have to face this burden alone.

Cancer may change your family’s routine and put life on hold for a while. There may be days when everything revolves around hospital visits, medicines and reports. But your child is still the same person, with the same dreams, interests and hopes for the future.

You start the morning with hope, lose it somewhere during the day, and then find it again in a small positive sign, a doctor’s reassurance, or your child’s smile.

Your heart keeps moving from hope to hopelessness and back to hope.

Somehow, you keep going, holding on to the hope that tomorrow may bring another reason to pray.

A driver may work harder than his passenger.
A nurse may work harder than the hospital owner.

Why?

Because income is not determined by effort alone. It's also determined by value, leverage, and ownership.
So work hard, but don't spend your entire life only selling your time.
