I have severe depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Been medicated for over a decade. An eating disorder nearly killed me and I’ve been hospitalised for my mental health more times than I can count.

But I’ve still worked since I was 16 and would never dream of claiming disability benefits.

I’ve worked 20+ hours per week since I was 16, holding down three jobs at a time on top of full-time education.

Even when it gets so bad I can’t brush my teeth, eat, or get out of bed. Even when there are days I can’t step outside of the house without having a panic attack. Even when I’ve been in hospital on the verge of organ failure because my eating disorder got so bad.

I absolutely reject the claim that this woman “can’t work” because of mild anxiety… while she is talking on Question Time in front of an audience of millions.

She said she’s worked before, but it’s hard to find a job and “even harder when you’re anxious”.

There is a difference between struggling with mental health, or even being diagnosed with a mild mental disorder, and being clinically unfit for work.

There are people with severe mental health disorders who really can’t maintain meaningful employment. People who have severe schizophrenia, anorexia nervosa, low-functioning autism, or other conditions that make it impossible to either get or keep a job.

And there are people with mental and physical illnesses who would give anything to be in that woman’s position — to be able to travel to a TV studio, sit in a packed audience and speak to millions on national telly.

They would kill to have the healthy body and abundance of opportunities that this woman is squandering. And they need the help she so shamelessly takes advantage of.

It’s laziness and entitlement.
Simple as.

People like her are the reason that millions of legitimately disabled people are tarnished with the same brush, or denied vital services and financial aid from our limited taxpayer coffers.

Shame on her.
