Robots in Web3: The next big narrative?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is no longer theoretical, it's unfolding right before our eyes. At the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital economies, humanoid robotics is emerging as one of the most transformative technologies of the next two decades.

The pace of expansion is astonishing.

The 2017 victory of Google’s AlphaGo system over the world’s top-ranked Go player, Ke Jie, inspired worldwide conversations about AI’s cognitive abilities. However, the recent participation of humanoid robots in a half-marathon against humans in Beijing (BBC News, April 19th, 2025) indicates a significant shift, demonstrating that humanoids are prepared to transition from the laboratory into our everyday lives.

What are humanoid robots?

A humanoid robot is, as expected, designed in a human-like form and imitates human body movements. Designed as a professional service robot, it collaborates with humans to enhance efficiency in different environments.

Equipped with sophisticated AI, these robots can sense their environment, make choices, strategize actions, and independently perform intricate tasks. Due to swift learning and adaptability, humanoid robots are currently advancing more rapidly than ever.

It has been forecasted by experts that by 2040, billions of humanoid robots could be part of our daily life, performing tasks that exceed the capabilities of contemporary factory robots across industries such as healthcare, public space upkeep, retail, logistics, education, and personal assistance. (Is this intriguing or intimidating? Perhaps a bit of both.) This information comes from an article associated with the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The Economic Outlook: Massive Growth Ahead

Significant investment is pouring into the humanoid robotics sector.

Goldman Sachs estimates that by 2035, the humanoid robot market could reach $38 billion.

Fortune Business Insights is even more hopeful, estimating a 50% annual growth that would lead to a market value of $66 billion by 2032.

So, where is this technology being developed? According to the Stanford AI Index Report, a large majority (83%) of AI intellectual property and 90% of significant foundation models come from China and the United States, with France contributing 5%. This encompasses large
language models, reinforcement learning models, neural networks, and a wide array of sensor types.

How Does This Connect With Web3?

One of Web3’s superpowers is understanding and riding the curve of macro trends. We saw this with the Metaverse hype. We’re seeing it now with the rise of RWAs (Real World Assets). The same wave could soon reach humanoid robotics, but this time, with even deeper real-world implications.

Web3 offers a natural fit for decentralized coordination, ownership, and monetization of robotic agents.

Think About these:

•Robot DAOs: Decentralized Autonomous Organizations could govern fleets of service bots, owned and directed by token holders.

•On-chain Labor & Payments: Robots with crypto wallets, executing tasks via smart contracts and receiving direct on-chain payments.

•Tokenized Robotics Data: Humanoids could gather training data that’s tokenized, verified via oracles, and sold through decentralized marketplaces.

•Transparent Audits & Logs: Immutable on-chain logs for robot behavior, useful for security, accountability, and compliance.

We’re already seeing precursors. Web3-native AI agents like @Autonolas, @Fetch_ai, or @wardenprotocol Agent Hub are showcasing how autonomous systems can live on-chain. It’s not hard to imagine humanoid bots interfacing with these protocols shortly, executing physical tasks tied to digital triggers.

As developers and protocols begin to embrace this convergence, humanoid robotics could evolve from a high-tech dream into a Web3-native asset class, one that’s transparent, programmable, and community-owned.

With all this promise comes complexity:

• Security risks: Robots operating autonomously must be hardened against both software and physical attacks.

• Regulation: The Legal status of autonomous robots interacting economically is still in limbo.
