Modern mathematicians call zero a number because it behaves like one in formal systems. But thatโs circular: the system was built to include zero, so of course it fits. Whether zero truly is a number canโt be answered from within it.
This is the kind of advice that sounds great in theory, but doesn't work very well in practice.
It implies you already know everything you need to know, and you simply need to execute. But that's rarely true. More often, you make some progress... then get stuck/lost/plateau... and need to expose yourself to completely new ways of thinking, sometimes in different disciplines, in order to see a path forward.
There's a reason so many Nobel Prize winners are multi-disciplinary practitioners. You could make the argument, on paper, that all their time spent painting or playing chess or learning classical piano is actually a distraction from their primary pursuit, craft, and goal.
But over and over again, studies show the opposite.
Being open to, and spending time consuming or creating outside of your core discipline leaves you more open to serendipity and being able to think orthogonallyโincreasing creative thinking.
Through the lens of cognitive science, the brain is not understood as a passive receiver of data...it is a generator of models, constantly anticipating and shaping the world it encounters.
So you live through imaginal constraints:
Mental framings that are simulations of the world.
When you plan your day, imagine a difficult conversation (or envision a future self) you are inhabiting the imaginal.
It allows you to shift perspectives, simulate futures, adopt identities.
And this activity is not beyond the reach of rational evaluation.
You can ask:
Is this story I'm telling myself adaptive or deceptive? Does it help me flourish?
Imagine a person who has long lived in fear, but begins to imagine themselves as courageous. Not merely pretending, but actively living into that imageโฆthen they are binding themselves to a vision that reorganizes their perception, their priorities, their behavior.
And if that imaginal frame leads them to confront reality more honestlyโฆthen it brings the person into deeper conformity with what is.
