Gateway Deep Sea Port Construction Begins in November
We are pleased to announce that construction of the over $7 billion Gateway Deep Sea Port and Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone in Ogun Waterside will commence in November, immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony.
Following the signing of the MoU with DP World MEA FZE in Paris, witnessed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, we are moving decisively from planning to implementation. We expect the port to be substantially completed within two and a half years.
This transformational project will unlock the enormous maritime and economic potential of Ogun State, attract major investments, create jobs and position Ogun Waterside and our State as a major maritime hub in West Africa.
We are equally encouraged by the rehabilitation of the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode–Ore Road and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, which will further strengthen connectivity and economic activities across Ogun East.
Beyond maritime development, we remain committed to harnessing the vast bitumen deposits within the Ijebu East axis and exploring the crude oil potential identified in parts of our State.
We deeply appreciate President Tinubu for his unwavering support and commitment to this historic project. Our administration will continue to combine vision with implementation to unlock opportunities, attract investment and deliver sustainable prosperity for the people of Ogun State.
Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON
Governor of Ogun State
On behalf of the Government and good people of Ogun State, we express our profound gratitude to His Excellency, President @officialABAT, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, whom we proudly acknowledge as the Facilitator-in-Chief of this transformational project.
For nearly 30 years, the vision of a deep seaport along our coastline was proposed, discussed and captured in official documents, yet it remained unrealised. Today, through the foresight, courage and determined leadership of President Tinubu, that long-standing aspiration is finally being transformed into reality.
Great nations are not built on intentions alone, but by leaders with the political will to turn possibilities into progress. By providing the strategic direction and enabling environment required, Mr. President has revived a vision that remained on the drawing board for three decades.
With the Gateway Deep Seaport and the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, we are opening a new chapter for Ogun State and positioning Nigeria to become an even stronger force in global trade, maritime commerce, industrialisation and economic development.
We deeply appreciate Mr. President and the Federal Government for their unwavering support and commitment to making this historic vision a reality.
Posterity will indeed be kind to you, Mr. President.
We have taken another significant step towards unlocking the economic potential of Ogun State with the signing of Memoranda of Understanding with DP World MEA FZE for the development of the Gateway Deep Sea Port and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone.
The projects, witnessed by our President, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in Paris, France, are expected to attract more than $7 billion in initial investment and create over 50,000 direct jobs, while opening new opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, maritime services, exports and other sectors.
The Gateway Deep Sea Port in Ogun Waterside will be integrated with a proposed 10,000-hectare Blue Marine Special Economic Zone and connected to other strategic infrastructure, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and our Gateway International Airport.
For us, this is about much more than building a port. We are creating an integrated economic corridor capable of connecting Ogun State’s productive capacity to markets across Africa and the rest of the world.
We appreciate President Tinubu for the leadership and federal support that have helped move this long-standing vision closer to reality. We equally commend the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Ports Authority and all our partners for their commitment.
Under our Building Our Future Together agenda, we remain committed to attracting investments, creating jobs and positioning Ogun State as a leading industrial, logistics and investment destination.

About the Gateway Deep Sea Port & Blue Marine SEZ:
— Over $7 billion in initial investment is expected to come into the project.
— DP World MEA FZE, one of the world's biggest port and logistics operators and the No. 1 port operator globally by revenue in 2025, is the strategic partner for the project.
— The Gateway Deep Sea Port will be located in Ogun Waterside, along the Ogun State stretch of the Lagos—Calabar Coastal Highway.
— The Ogun section of the coastal highway provides 28km of strategic access to the port, connecting it to the hinterland, reducing logistics costs and helping decongest Lagos.
— The port is projected to have an 18 metre draft and a 4km berth, making it capable of handling some of the largest vessels in the world.
— Upon completion, it is projected to be among the deepest and longest ports in Africa.
— The port will be integrated with a 10,000 hectare Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, creating an ecosystem for manufacturing, logistics, maritime services, technology and exports.
— The project is expected to create over 50,000 direct jobs, with many more indirect jobs, while stimulating SMEs and expanding supply chains.
— It will strengthen Nigeria's export capacity, attract foreign direct investment and create opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, maritime services and other sectors.
— The project will form part of Ogun's emerging multimodal infrastructure network, connecting the Deep Sea Port to the Gateway International Airport, dry ports, the Lagos Calabar Coastal Highway and other road infrastructure.
For Ogun East, Ogun State and the wider National Economy, this creates a new maritime and industrial corridor around Ogun Waterside.
This is a major infrastructure project with implications far beyond the port itself.
Vision + Infrastructure + Investment = Economic Growth. 🌊🚢
