As a society, we are all contributing, directly or indirectly, to many of the challenges we face in this country today.
I saw the names of some of the prisoners recently released from Ethiopia, and my first temptation was to stereotype them based on the ethnic origins of their names. But on second thought, I reminded myself that crime is not ethnicity-based.
The truth is that we Nigerians have, in one way or another, contributed to the outcome of many individuals and to the state of our nation today through our beliefs, classism, hatred, excessive love for money, and the humiliation of humble beginnings. We often encourage shortcuts and mock due process. These are just a few of the many attitudes that are negatively affecting our society.
We need to take a hard look at ourselves and engage in honest self-reflection because we cannot continue like this. If we truly want a better country, the change must begin not only with our leaders but also with us as citizens.
