1. Resmetirom (Rezdiffra)
2. Semaglutide (Ozempic)
These are based on Category A level evidence.
There are NO other drugs with this level of evidence for doctors to prescribe for severe NASH (severe form of fatty liver disease).
Vitamin E and Omega-3 only reduces liver fat & inflammation modestly, they do not affect fibrosis (liver scarring) which is most important.
Utterly useless drugs for severe fatty liver disease include:
Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA, Ursodiol), milk thistle or silymarin, saroglitazar, S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe)
Make no mistake, the primary treatment for severe form of fatty liver disease is treatment of metabolic disease (diabetes, low functioning thyroid, obesity, high blood pressure, high lipids) and aerobic exercise + weight training and daily calorie deficit.
