I witnessed an event in Costco the other day that seemed so small but was such a huge reflection of what is ailing our society. It’s kind of haunting me.

A child knocked a stack of clothing to the floor. She ran to her mother, who shrugged, looked around, smirked, and they walked away, leaving it all in the middle of the aisle.

I instinctively started to pick it up to move it out of the way of other shoppers when two store employees came over, didn’t acknowledge me at all, and began retabling it while one said to the other loudly, “I just don’t know what’s wrong with people these days. That is so rude, and people are just so rude.”

The mother overheard it (as was intended), turned her cart around, and said: “Well, that’s your job, and I figured that you want it a certain way, so don’t be making snide remarks about me.”

The two of them stood there and carped loudly at each other, the little girl watching. My husband and I were briefly concerned they might come to blows as we quickly left the area.

Here’s what adults in civilized societies do:

The mother should have gone to assist the daughter, reassured her that accidents happen, and together put the clothing back as neatly as they could before moving on with their day. Apologizing to the employees if they stepped in. And thanking them for their help.

The store employees should have addressed ME politely and said, “Thank you; we are happy to take care of this.” Then ignore the cause.

And last but not least, if none of that happened, the mother should ignore the comments, committed herself to doing better next time, and continued instead of coming back to defend clearly poor behavior. Or more courageously, go back to apologize and thank them (despite their bad behavior), not defend her own lack of responsibility.

Instead, all of them made it uncomfortable and awkward for everyone within earshot, taught the poor child who made the mistake nothing in the process and traumatizing her further and made the entire accident bigger and dumber and angry.

It was so awful. And as I’ve thought about it later, I’ve realized it is a microcosm of everything our society is struggling with today. It makes me really sad.

We’ve got to learn to be adults. We’ve got to learn to think about others and do the right thing. We’ve got to have the emotional reactions and responsibility of adults not children.

This is one of the best takedowns of Mark Carney I’ve seen.

He’s not a businessman. He’s never run a company. He’s never met a payroll. He’s a lifelong bureaucrat who somehow convinced people he’s some kind of economic genius.

The guy actually went on TV in Atlantic Canada and downplayed steel tariffs because “we don’t use that much steel.” That’s not just tone-deaf — that’s fundamental ignorance of how manufacturing, auto, and resource sectors actually work in this country.

Carney keeps all the worst Trudeau-era policies in place — emissions caps, anti-oil and gas rules, the whole net-zero scam — but now he can personally override them whenever he wants. If those policies were good, why does he need an override button? He’s admitting they’re damaging Canada but refuses to scrap them.

He’s concentrating more power in the PMO than ever, acting like the King of Canada while surrounding himself with the same failed Trudeau retreads. His own caucus is still pushing the climate nonsense that’s been proven to waste billions and make life more expensive for regular people.

Meanwhile, oil and gas — our single biggest export earner — is still being deliberately held back. Provincial trade barriers are still choking the economy. And the same people who created this mess are still in charge, still pocketing money from the climate grift while average Canadians get squeezed.

This government was a failure under Trudeau. Under Carney it’s just a more polished version of the same failure.

Less government. Lower taxes. Cut the red tape. Develop our resources. Stop robbing the middle class to enrich insiders.

That’s the only reset that actually works.
