On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, VON, dared to call on His Excellency, former Vice President and 2027 Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, to step aside from the 2027 Presidential race, to allow the South complete an unconstitutional mandatory eight years in Office.

For millions of Nigerians however, zoning is not only unconstitutional, it is very irrelevant at a time like this, when the country is running on autopilot, under the incompetent administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It is common knowledge that people are dying and people are hungry daily, across the country. Between January 2023 and June 2026, over 15,000 Nigerians have been killed in attacks by bandits, terrorists and armed herdsmen, according to data tracked by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. In Benue, Plateau, Zamfara and Niger States, villages are being wiped out daily. No one is safe on the road travelling from Abuja to Kaduna, as well as along other Federal roads.

At the same time, things are very expensive in the Market. The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, stated that food inflation has risen. A 50 kilogram bag of rice that sold for N27,000 in 2022, now sells for over N90,000.

The NBS further reported that 133 million Nigerians are multi-dimensionally poor. That is more than 6 out of 10 Nigerians.

In all of these, what Nigerians are hearing from the APC is "zoning"; at a time the citizens have another opportunity to correct this wrong, by choosing a very competent 2027 President.

How does zoning bring down the price of garri in the Market? How does rotation stop the kidnappers from abducting innocent Schoolchildren for huge ransoms daily? How does "turn by turn" politics give a Graduate in Onitsha, a good paying job?

Nigerians need a President who can win in all sectors, and can govern all people; and not a President, just because it is his region's turn.

Let us be honest. Since democracy returned in 1999, we have rotated power. Nonetheless, millions of Nigerians argue that rotation has not made life better, especially for ordinary Nigerians that have no access to power; it did not stop the country's debt profile from rising astronomically, with little or nothing to show for it; it did not reduce to ravaging poverty; neither did it stop the insecurity from worsening today.

Recall, that countries that do not practice zoning are doing well, at least way better than Nigeria.

The United States of America, USA, has had Presidents from different States, with no regional formula. From Barack Obama to Donald Trump to Joe Biden. America did not break. India has had Leaders from different regions with no rotation, and today, it is the 4th largest economy in the world. What matters is competence, not postcode.

Nigerians are tired of stories. We need action; an action 2027 President. Atiku has said it clearly: Fund the Military, the Police and other Security Agencies properly. Go after Sponsors of terrorism. Cut waste in government. Back small businesses with real loans. Revive the Refineries. Create jobs through special economic zones in all six zones. Push for True Federalism, so that States can control resources and security, and the Local Government Councils can operate independently. These are the real desires of millions of Nigerians; not zoning.

Emerging report on Sunday, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Federal Government reportedly spent ₦358.32 billion on electricity subsidies in the first quarter of 2026, even as millions of Nigerians continue to endure crippling blackouts nationwide.

After hundreds of billions of naira in electricity spendings, homes remain in darkness, businesses depend on generators, manufacturers battle soaring production costs, and millions of Nigerians still cannot expect stable electricity.

The simple question Nigerians are asking is: What exactly did the ₦358.32 billion achieve under the President Bola Tinubu administration?

Nigeria, Africa's largest economy and home to more than 230 million people, has an installed electricity generation capacity of about 13,000 Mega Watts, MW. Yet, because of ageing infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks and systemic inefficiencies, the country typically transmits and distributes only 4,000 to 5,500MW, far below what is needed to power homes, industries and businesses, around the country.

The consequences are enormous. The World Bank estimates that Nigeria loses nearly $29 billion (about ₦44 trillion) annually, due to unreliable electricity, as businesses spend heavily on diesel and petrol generators, production slows, investments are discouraged and economic growth suffers.

Since President Tinubu assumed Office in May 2023, the Power sector has lurched from one crisis to another. The national grid has suffered repeated collapses, plunging homes, hospitals, schools and businesses, into darkness. About 12 national grid collapses were recorded in 2024 alone, while the failures continued into 2025 and 2026, despite repeated assurances that reforms and investments would stabilise the very critical sector.

For millions of Nigerians, the impact is deeply personal. From barbers and welders, to frozen food dealers, cybercafés and neighbourhood pharmacies, small businesses now spend more on fuel, than they once paid for electricity. Manufacturers increasingly generate their own Power, pushing up the cost of locally made goods. Families struggling with inflation are forced to budget for generator fuel, before meeting other essential needs.

Moreover, ₦358.32 billion gulped down on electricity subsidies in just 3 months, yet the country is still drowning in blackouts. Where is the Power supply? This is not subsidy; this is a black hole for public funds, while the citizens suffer in darkness, businesses collapse and generators roar 24/7.

Nigerians deserve a detailed account of how the ₦358.32 billion was utilised; who received the funds, what projects were funded and what measurable improvements have been achieved.

If the money was lost to poor planning, inefficiency or policy failure, those responsible should answer for it. If any investigation uncovers fraud or diversion of the public funds, those found culpable should face the full weight of the Law.

What makes the situation even more politically significant, is President Tinubu's previous campaign pledge. During the 2023 Presidential election campaign, Tinubu challenged Nigerians to judge his administration by its performance on electricity; declaring that if he fails to deliver stable Power within his first term, Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term.

Three years into that promise, millions of Nigerians are still counting hours of blackout, instead of hours of uninterrupted Power supply.

The attention of "Atiku Is For The People" global movement has on Sunday morning, been drawn to disturbing media reports concerning the recent altercation between the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, over alleged claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has politically "handed over" Ebonyi State to the FCT Minister, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ordinarily, we would have dismissed such reports as mere political banter. However, coming from a sitting State Governor elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nigerians cannot afford to ignore the grave implications of these allegations.

According to media reports, Governor Nwifuru alleged: "Some people are going around and saying that they discussed with President Tinubu and that the President has given Ebonyi to PDP. They said Nyesom Wike is their Leader, and that Wike said the President has given Ebonyi to him."

The implication of such an allegation is too serious to be ignored.

If indeed individuals are going around claiming that President Tinubu has ceded Ebonyi State to a political Ally, then Nigerians must have to come to a conclusion that the 2027 general elections have already been manipulated and shared among APC Politicians.

Recall, that over the last three years of President Tinubu's administration, Nigerians have witnessed an unprecedented concentration of political influence in the hands of a few individuals closely associated with the Presidency. The growing perception that powerful political actors can determine outcomes across States, has created widespread apprehension regarding the credibility of the 2027 elections.

Governor Nwifuru himself, appeared deeply disturbed by the alleged development, when he reportedly declared: "We are not afraid. Nobody should push us, because we have all it takes to consume whoever is trying us; we have all it takes to destroy whoever is trying us."

It is instructive that these remarks are not coming from the opposition. They are coming from a serving APC Governor, speaking at a pro-Tinubu gathering.

If Ebonyi State could allegedly be "assigned" to Wike, who then has Kano State been politically allocated to? Who controls Katsina? Who determines the fate of Abia, Rivers, Delta and Lagos States? Have the 2027 political destinies of Nigeria's 36 States and the FCT already been negotiated behind closed doors? Does it means that votes no longer count?

These questions become even more pertinent, against the backdrop of mass defections into the ruling party, and the increasing perception that electoral outcomes are being predetermined through the "Cabals", in Aso Rock.

"Atiku Is For The People" global movement believes that the greatest threat to democracy is not defeat at the polls, but the erosion of public confidence in the electoral process. Once citizens begin to believe that election results have been written long before ballots are cast, voter apathy inevitably follows, and democracy itself is endangered.

We therefore, call on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, Religious Leaders, World Leaders, the Media, and the entire International Community, to remain vigilant, and ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair, transparent and credible.

President Tinubu also owes Nigerians a duty to publicly reassure citizens that no individual, irrespective of political stature, has been given control over any State of the Federation, as far as the 2027 elections are concerned.

The call followed the decision of the Federal High Court, sitting in Lokoja, setting aside its earlier judgement ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, as a political party.

Reacting to the development, Atiku's Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, speaking on his behalf, said that the ruling should serve as a wake-up call to opposition Politicians and democratic forces, across the country.

In a post on his verified X handle, Ibe warned that the opposition could face increasing political pressure, if it fails to close ranks, ahead of the next general elections.

His exact words: "The decision of the Federal High Court Lokoja in setting aside its earlier judgment on the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, should be a wake-up call that there is no hiding place for the opposition, as the incompetent and clueless Tinubu sets his sights on enthroning a de facto one-party state."

He further alleged that President Tinubu is determined to weaken opposition parties, in the build-up to the 2027 elections.

"His message is loud and clear: That he will obliterate the opposition and destroy our hard-won democracy, if he does not have his way in the 2027 election", he added.

Against this backdrop, Paul urged opposition Leaders, particularly Obi and Kwankwaso, to harmonise their political strengths with those of the former Vice President, in order to mount a formidable challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027.

"It is not too late for the opposition to harmonize their strengths, ahead of 2027, if the Yar'Adua 2.0 President Tinubu is to be retired to either Bourdillon or Iragbiji", he stated.

The reference to Bourdillon is widely seen as an allusion to President Tinubu's private residence, in Lagos, while Iragbiji is his ancestral hometown, in Osun State.

Recall, that the Federal High Court, in Lokoja, had earlier ordered INEC to register the NDC, after ruling in favour of the Promoters of the proposed political party, who argued that the Electoral body had failed to act on their application within the time stipulated by Law.

However, in a dramatic reversal, the Court subsequently vacated the judgement, effectively nullifying the order compelling INEC to register the party. The Court reportedly cited procedural irregularities in arriving at its latest decision.

When Nigeria's First Lady, Pastor Oluremi Tinubu, advised struggling Nigerians, during the launch of the "Free to Shine Triple Elimination Campaign", in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Thursday, to embrace petty trading, by declaring that, "to start an akara business does not take a lot of money. To start roasting corn or kuli-kuli does not take much", many citizens saw not empathy, but a disturbing disconnect between Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the harsh economic realities confronting ordinary people in the country.

While there may be nothing degrading about selling akara, roasting corn or producing kuli-kuli, as millions of hardworking Nigerians survive through informal businesses; the problem arises when members of APC's very affluent political class, insulated from the biting economic realities they helped create, prescribe subsistence trading as the pathway out of poverty for citizens battered by inflation, rising food prices and declining purchasing power.

Today, many families skip meals, parents withdraw their children from Schools, because they can no longer afford the fees, and small businesses are collapsing under soaring energy costs. In such a climate, advising citizens to embrace roadside trading sounds less like economic wisdom, and more like an admission that the government has run out of ideas.

The statement becomes even more jarring, when juxtaposed with the lifestyle and political priorities of the APC establishment. Only recently, Mrs. Tinubu donated brand new Sport Utility Vehicles, SUVs, to APC Women Leaders in Abia, Anambra, Bauchi, Osun and Oyo States, describing them as personal gifts to strengthen party mobilisation. The symbolism was impossible to ignore: Expensive cars for party loyalists; akara and roasted corn for the masses.

Sadly, this condescending style of "empowerment" has become a recurring feature of Nigerian politics. For decades, Politicians have staged elaborate ceremonies to distribute wheelbarrows, sewing machines, grinding machines and motorcycles, while leaving untouched the structural causes of poverty. Such programmes often generate headlines, but rarely generate prosperity.

Even more troubling is the contrast between the sacrifices demanded of ordinary Nigerians, and the extravagant lifestyles of the political class. While citizens are urged to tighten their belts, governments continue to spend billions annually on convoys, luxury vehicles, foreign trips, government house renovations, and Presidential Air Fleet.

What Nigerians require is not "akara economics". They need transformational policies capable of creating decent jobs, reviving industries, guaranteeing stable electricity, securing farmlands, supporting businesses and restoring the dignity of labour.

That is why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has consistently advocated for policies centred on job creation, economic diversification, private sector-led growth and expanded opportunities for young Nigerians.

Governments are elected not to teach citizens how to survive poverty, but to create the conditions under which poverty becomes the exception, rather than the norm. The poor deserve more than survival tips; they deserve a Leadership that shares in their sacrifices and inspires hope for genuine prosperity.

A new nationwide survey revealing an unprecedented collapse of public confidence in government Institutions, may have sounded an alarm bell for President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The report, released by the Africa Polling Institute, API, on Friday, as part of its 2026 Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey, painted a troubling picture of a nation steadily losing faith in its Political Leaders and Public Institutions, at a time of severe economic hardship and worsening insecurity.

Perhaps, the most damning for the President Tinubu administration is the finding that a staggering 83 percent of Nigerians expressed "little or no trust" in the Federal Government under President Tinubu, while 82 percent said that they have little or no confidence in the National Assembly led by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and House of Representatives Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

According to the report, trust in Public Institutions is now at its lowest level. The report stated unequivocally: "The survey findings report growing citizens' distrust and low public confidence in the government and Public Institutions."

Even more worrying for the ruling party, the survey found that Nigerians continue to place significantly higher trust in informal and community Institutions, such as Religious Leaders, Traditional Rulers and family networks, than in elected Officials and State Institutions.

For millions of ordinary Nigerians, this findings merely reflect everyday reality. When families cannot afford basic food items, when insecurity forces farmers off their lands, or when job opportunities disappear, many citizens increasingly turn not to government Institutions, but to their Pastors, Imams and Community Leaders, for support, counselling and hope.

Across Nigeria, Churches and Mosques have evolved beyond places of worship. They have become centres for food distribution, welfare support, conflict resolution and emotional healing.

Political Analysts say that this growing trust deficit poses serious electoral risks for the re-election of President Tinubu.

Elections are fundamentally built on trust. Citizens vote for Leaders they believe understand their pains, keep their promises and possess the capacity to improve their lives. Once that trust disappears, political loyalty can shift rapidly.

The danger for the APC is that no amount of defections, endorsements or political realignments, may substitute for public trust.

If increasing number of citizens continue to find their answers with their Pastors, Imams and Traditional Leaders, rather than in government Institutions, then the ruling party may face a far more difficult road to 2027, than many currently imagine.

Although, the President Tinubu administration has defended its reforms, including the fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate liberalisation, millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs.

The World Bank recently projected that over 129 million Nigerians are living below the national poverty line, underscoring the depth of economic hardship confronting households across the country.

Inflation, despite moderating after statistical rebasing, has remained elevated, while food prices continue to put pressure on family incomes.

Atiku's Strategists are expected to aggressively campaign on bread-and-butter issues, including inflation, unemployment, insecurity, hunger and the rising cost of living; issues that directly affect ordinary Nigerians.

Atiku's political machinery in Northern Nigeria, also remains one of his biggest assets. The former Vice President continues to command substantial influence across the North-East, North-West and parts of the North Central.

He reminded President Tinubu: "If you are truly popular and your policies have positively bettered the lives of the citizens, you should not be afraid of a free and fair competition.

The victory effectively cleared the path for President Tinubu's bid for a second and final term in Office, Constitutionally.

However, the uncertainty surrounding Vice President Shettima's future has become even more striking, because rival opposition parties have moved swiftly to settle or substantially clarify their 2027 Presidential tickets.

His Excellency, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, after emerging as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, wasted no time in unveiling former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate, presenting what the party described as a "Unity and Rescue ticket" for the 2027 Presidential race.

The attention of "Atiku Is For The People" global movement has on Thursday night, been drawn to a reckless statement made by a Political Analyst, Mr. Segun Sowunmi, during an interview on Arise Television, earlier on Thursday, June 25, 2026, wherein he projected that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could win as many as 22 States in the 2027 Presidential election.

While every Nigerian is entitled to personal opinions, however, such political projection must be grounded in facts, electoral history and prevailing realities.

His projection that President Tinubu's votes will significantly improve in the South-East, South-South, North Central and North-West, was a mere guess work, without empirical facts.

First, the South-East has consistently remained one of the most difficult regions for the All Progressives Congress, APC, since 1999. In the 2023 Presidential election, President Tinubu lost the zone woefully.

Similarly, the South-South has historically remained an opposition stronghold in Presidential elections. Given the prevailing economic hardship and growing public dissatisfaction across the country, assumptions of sweeping gains for the ruling party remain speculative at best.

Sowunmi's optimism about the North-West equally deserves interrogation. The region remains Nigeria's largest voting bloc, but continues to grapple with insecurity, banditry, poverty, Farmers' displacement and massive youth unemployment. In Kano State, which has one of the country's largest voters population, President Tinubu came third in 2023, behind both the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The enduring influence of His Excellency, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, makes any projection of an easy APC victory in Kano State, in 2027, highly questionable.

The assumption that State Governors and political heavyweights can simply deliver votes for President Tinubu, is equally outdated. The 2023 election proved otherwise. Despite controlling Lagos State politically, for over two decades, President Tinubu lost the State in the Presidential election. He also lost the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. These outcomes reveal that Nigerian voters are increasingly independent and driven by their lived experiences, rather than elite endorsements.

Perhaps, the greatest flaw in Sowunmi's analysis was his failure to account for the prevailing economic realities of the ordinary Nigerian voter.

President Tinubu won the 2023 election with approximately 8.79 million votes, less than 37 percent of total valid votes cast in the Presidential election. Today, Nigerians are confronted with one of the most severe cost-of-living crisis in recent history. Fuel prices have risen, while the naira has suffered significant depreciation and food prices continue to soar.

History offers an important lesson. In 2015, Nigerians voted out an incumbent Federal Government, despite far lower inflation, cheaper fuel prices, and a stronger currency than what obtains today. Democracy ultimately rewards or punishes governments, based on the lived experiences of the people.

The 2027 Presidential election will not be decided in television studios or by speculative political arithmetic. It will be decided in homes, markets, farms, campuses and workplaces, by Nigerians asking one simple question: Are we better off today, than we were in May 2023?

That question, rather than wishful projections, will shape the outcome of the next Presidential election.

Just when Nigerian citizens thought that the recent drop in Global Crude Oil Prices would bring the much-needed relief at Filling Stations across the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration has kept the price stubbornly high, with many Stations still dispensing above N1,300 per litre.

Following the easing tension in the Middle East, Global Oil Prices have fallen sharply to levels recorded before the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and Israel. Brent Crude, which had surged amid fears of supply disruptions, has retreated significantly, as Markets stabilised.

Across the world, consumers are beginning to smile again. In several countries, falling Crude Prices are already translating into lower fuel costs, reduced transportation expenses and some relief from inflationary pressures. Governments are actively deploying measures to ensure that citizens benefit from the decline.

Nigeria, however, appears trapped in a different reality under President Tinubu's watch, which is against the stance of His Excellency, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Despite being Africa's largest Oil Producer, motorists across the country continue to buy petrol at prices ranging from N1,350 per litre and above.

A Commercial Bus Driver, in Abuja, Ibrahim Musa, lamented that every additional naira added to fuel prices, translates directly to more suffering for his family.

"We are tired. Any time fuel goes up, transport fares increase immediately. But when prices come down internationally, nobody remembers us. How do we survive?" he queried.

For Petty Traders already battling with soaring food prices, the continued rise in transportation costs is devastating.

"I spend almost half of my daily profit on transport alone", lamented Mrs. Esther Okonkwo, a Tomato Seller, in Nyanya Market.

She added: "Everything is expensive; food, school fees, house rent. Yet government Officials keep telling us to be patient. For how long?"

Recall, that since President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023, Nigerians have endured relentless economic hardships. Transportation costs have skyrocketed, electricity tariffs have risen, food inflation has worsened, and millions have slipped deeper into poverty.

Economic Analysts note that in many countries, governments intervene through tax reductions, strategic reserves or temporary relief measures, to ease the burden on citizens whenever energy shocks occur.

In Nigeria, however, citizens often bear the full burden when prices rise, but rarely enjoy the benefits when global prices fall.

How can an Oil-producing nation continue to impose some of the highest fuel costs on its citizens, even when International Oil Prices are declining?

Many Nigerians had hoped that the commencement of operations at the Dangote Refinery, would usher in an era of cheaper petroleum products. Yet, months after the Refinery commenced large-scale operations, the average citizen says little has changed.

As Global Markets cool down and Motorists in other countries begin to enjoy reliefs, Nigerians continue to wait, anxiously, painfully and increasingly impatiently, for the day when global prices reduction will finally reflect at the nation's fuel pumps.

A nationwide revolt against hunger, inflation and worsening living conditions, is gathering momentum, as millions of Nigerians prepare for what Activists describe as the "mother of all protests", against the President Bola Tinubu administration and the failed All Progressives Congress, APC, Leadership.
The mobilisation follows a blistering attack on President Tinubu’s Federal Government, by the Solidarity Network for Workers Rights, SNWR, on Thursday, which accused the President Tinubu administration of plunging workers and ordinary citizens into unprecedented misery, through what it termed anti-poor economic policies.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its Secretary, Lateef Adams, the group declared that the economic crisis confronting Nigerians has become unbearable.

It said: "The working masses have rarely experienced this kind of economic misery currently confronting the country.

"Yet, despite the extraordinary increase in the cost of living, workers' wages remain stagnant and grossly inadequate."
According to the group, the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage has already been wiped out by runaway inflation, while many State Governments are yet to fully implement it.

The workers' body blamed the removal of fuel subsidy, naira devaluation and repeated hikes in electricity tariffs, for pushing millions of Nigerians to the brink.

The SNWR also raised an alarm over the soaring cooking gas prices, revealing that many Nigerians now pay between N1,600 and N2,100 per kilogram, despite the official benchmark prices ranging from N1,018 to N1,177.
"This official admission exposes the extent of profiteering and market manipulation taking place in the sector", the group stated.

The organisation further accused Marketers and Government Regulators of exploiting citizens, insisting that Nigerians never enjoy the benefits of falling Global Crude Oil prices.

"Whenever International crude oil prices rise, Marketers and Distributors are quick to increase pump prices. Yet, when prices decline globally, the reductions are either delayed or completely ignored", the statement added, describing the situation as proof of "the fraud behind the so-called deregulation" of the Petroleum sector.

The group reserved some of its harshest criticism for the Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, accusing both bodies of failing to move beyond rhetoric.

"The struggle against hardship cannot be won through appeals and press statements alone", the SNWR declared.

It added: "It requires organised mass action, capable of challenging the anti-poor policies of the Tinubu regime, and the capitalist interests that profit from the suffering of the people."
The organisation consequently urged Labour Unions to immediately begin nationwide mobilisation of workers, youths and communities, for mass action against rising fuel prices, soaring electricity tariffs, and the spiraling cost of living.
