which idiot security consultant is going around teaching local banks that disabling paste on password fields is more secure? and how much do I have to spend for someone to shoot that guy?

I admit that as I learned about this feature, it made me kind of sad. The thought that was going through my head was: this is going to be too much of a temptation. Once you can “safely” outsource tasks to the cloud, why bother doing them locally. Outsource everything!
I'm starting to feel like I fundamentally disagree with Microsoft's vision for the future of computing in a way that makes me seriously question the future of Windows
which apparently is OS-as-a-service, cloud all the things, ads that would make a news website blush, AI everywhere (on the cloud, of course), Microsoft account Absolutely Required, Internet connection Absolutely Required, More Webviews, Edge Is The Only Browser (Now With Free Smiley Toolbar Included), Please Use OneDrive, We Know What Brand Of Bog Roll You Use
like, genuinely I don't mind Windows 11 the way it is right now for the most part, but it feels like they keep adding more and more of the exact sort of crap me and a lot of other people typically complain about, and they're not showing any signs of stopping either
remember how they were reluctant for so long to even just add an option to remove that god-awful news feed nobody likes from the Widgets pane? you know those preloaded launchers in the Start menu for obviously sponsored apps that just send you to the Microsoft Store? do you want to use OneDrive? are you sure you don't want to use OneDrive? ARE YOU REALLY SURE YOU DO NOT WANT ONEDRIVE!?!?!?!?!?!?!? PLEASE ONEDRIVE WILL LITERALLY GRANT YOU THREE WISHES AND PRINT MONEY PLEASE USE ONEDRIVE PLEASE WE ARE BEGGING YOU oh- by the way, we put adverts in Outlook that look like emails~ :3
it's not even that I mind the existence of or integration with cloud services (ffs I am a very heavy user of iCloud) but it's that there's basically no way to opt out anymore and that they keep trying to beg you to use them. it's also significantly harder if not impossible to set up a new Windows 11 install without a Microsoft account now, EVEN ON PRO (desperately begging people and making you click "local" like 5 times was apparently not enough I suppose). do they really think this is going to help their services have a good reputation?
SURELY they make enough money off of Azure that they can afford to make Windows just... do the shit you want it to do instead of getting in your way and trying desperately to get you to do things Their Way? like GNU/Linux, or to a lesser extent macOS? macOS does also want to sell you iCloud services of course, but it takes a different approach – you can continue using your Mac entirely locally without an Apple account if you want once you decline to sign up with an Apple ID, but certain features that rely on iCloud will simply be unavailable and they won't bug you further. maybe they'll try to sell you that Apple TV+ trial in a notification or something but that's about it really. worst thing is basically just that you can't use the App Store because that needs an account. they don't preload it with sponsored launchers to install other companies' software, desperately try to get you to use Safari by opening it against your will even though you set another default browser, or shove random adverts in core system UI. macOS has its own issues of course (like making it difficult to modify internal files if you want to due to the read-only system volume) but just Leaving You The Fuck Alone isn't one of them
and yes, a lot of this can be disabled. but it's just annoying and particularly sucks on the Pro version, which costs extra and is supposed to be an Advanced version of Windows for Power Users who want full control over their computers. like if you're going out of your way to get that I don't think it's unreasonable to be granted the luxury of not having a link to Candy Crush on the Start menu? sure it's not that big of a deal right now – I can happily use Windows 11 with all of this stuff amounting to minor annoyances at worst – but it's this direction that's really worrying me and that I'm not a fan of, and what it means for the future of Windows. plus I know my way around a computer and how to disable this stuff, but does Your Mum? all this shit would be fine for me on the Home edition of Windows if that was free (which it is not), but it's frankly inexcusable that you have to do some weird gymnastics to more or less hack the setup just to make a local user account on something labelled as "Pro"
Windows 11 is really the product of a team of great developers and designers who just want to make a nice OS and a bunch of washed-up execs trying to maximise profits being at odds with one another, and you can tell
TEAM SPIRIT - THE INTERNATIONAL 12 CHAMPIONS 🏆
The path to victory has always been challenging and demanding. This season, we took on a tremendous responsibility and worked on every aspect of our game. There were failures and difficulties at the beginning, but we never gave up. Every win and even every loss taught us something.
