@chattercox1 @HenleywRegatta @HenleyRegatta There are really only two or three really important distance makers to identify & learn. It is far more important to be able to steer dead straight along the entire course. Practice alongside the booms as much as you can & focus on steering above everything else.

@ReadingAM Asking a friendly fast (W)4- where they had issues is always useful. Also watch how the local masters crews steer the course……they just know. And if you walk the course in the morning ask a marshal, not an umpire. Marshals are from the club. 🤫

3) Know the course. A cox (or whoever steers) can win or lose the race for you. At Reading Am we have course postcards for a reason. A good cox will learn the distances on the postcard and ask those in the know about the course. Scribble notes on the other side of the postcard.
