Scientists in Cambridge have successfully reversed signs of aging in human cells for the first time.
Researchers took skin cells from a 53 year old woman and rejuvenated them so they behaved more like cells from a 23 year old.
The discovery is one of the strongest examples yet that some aspects of biological aging may actually be reversible.
The work is based on the same cellular reprogramming technology that was used to create Dolly in 1996.
Usually, scientists expose adult cells to special chemicals for around 50 days, completely resetting them into stem cells. But in this study, the process was stopped after only 12 days.
The cells kept their identity as skin cells, but many age related changes were reversed.
The rejuvenated cells showed signs of behaving more like younger tissue, including increased collagen related activity and faster movement in laboratory wound healing tests.
Researchers believe the technique could one day help treat conditions linked to aging such as diabetes, heart disease, and neurological disorders.
Scientists stress that the research is still in its early stages. Full cellular reprogramming has previously been linked to cancer risks, so much safer methods would be needed before this could ever be used in people.
Even so, the findings suggest aging may not be a completely one way process after all.
